EDITOR: 5 years ago today, the Joplin tornado touched down just east of the of the state line at 5:34PM and headed toward Joplin as it intensified. Below is the story of one of our chasers, Cody Robertson:
"Last year, I talked in detail about my time spent after the Joplin tornado doing search and rescue. Today, I just really want to use this opportunity to talk about how tornadoes affect lives and what needs to be done to prevent more deaths in the future.
I want to start off by touching on some basic things that can save your life:
While there is absolutely nothing that can be done to prevent tornadoes from impacting towns, there are things that can be done to help prevent the loss of life and prevent injuries.
When tornado warnings are issued, seek shelter! NOAA Weather Radios are the best and most reliable means of receiving warnings. Seek shelter in the lowest level away from windows and doors. Keep an emergency kit with things you can use in a worst case scenario.
When I pulled into Joplin, after the tornado had violently ripped through town, I was absolutely speechless. I could smell gas and an odor that I can't describe. I could hear screams for help that brought tears to my eyes. I went door to door for almost 24 hours and I saw things that I will never forget. Not only did I see death and injuries, I also saw people who lost everything... and yet were still assisting with anything needed. Never in my life have I witnessed so much kindness and hospitality shown from a city who lost almost everything. Families, business owners, and even visitors came together at a time they needed it the most.
Joplin truly is strong.
"Joplin Strong!"
