Sherwood Forest Neighborhood Association, Columbia SC

Sherwood Forest Neighborhood Association, Columbia SC Sherwood Forest is a neighborhood in southeast Columbia, South Carolina bounded by Kilbourne Road, Devine Street, Beltline Boulevard, and Rosewood Drive.

This 800-resident community was first developed by W. Gordon Belser in the 1930s. Bounded by Kilbourne Road, Rosewood Drive, South Beltline Boulevard and Devine Street, the multi-cultural urban neighborhood is home to about 300 families. Residents enjoy the unusually hilly terrain loaded with thousands of trees, bird life and the pristine 9-acre UofSC Belser Arboretum, an education laboratory on a

tributary of the Gills Creek Watershed. Heathwood and Sims City Parks are within six blocks. Students walk, bike, scooter, and bus to Dreher High School, Rosewood Elementary and Hand Middle School. The private St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School is adjacent to Sherwood Forest, and the private Hammond School and Heathwood Hall Episcopal School are nearby. Midlands Technical College Beltline Campus offers 120 programs and adjoins the neighborhood. All are award winning institutions. Notably, Sherwood Forest encompasses the Original Historic Frogtown Community, just east of Kilbourne Road. It includes about 45 residences traditionally owned by African Americans. Four major grocery chain stores (including Whole Foods) and three pharmacies are within walkable distance. The UofSC Campus and State Capitol complex are approximately a 12-minute drive to the west. Numerous COMET bus stops are adjacent to the neighborhood. Easy access to the Interstate Highway System is at I-77 (Exit 10) Fort Jackson Boulevard. The Jim Hamilton – LB Owens Airport is a two-mile drive and offers a 5,011-foot jet aviation runway. Families enjoy the Hunter Gatherer microbrewery/bistro and the 68-acre Owens Field Park featuring soccer and baseball fields, disc golf, skateboarding, track & field facilities, an orchard/garden, and nature trails. All adjacent to the airport. Sherwood Forest Neighborhood Association publishes a monthly CRIER eNews and is affiliated with the 119-member, Greater Columbia Council of Neighborhoods. A recently inaugurated Forest Friends network seeks to educate residents and encourage healthy tree management. Safety being the primary goal, residents appreciate the maximum speed limit of 25 MPH. Sherwood Forest neighborhood is in Columbia City Council District 3 and is currently represented by Will Brennan.

Valerie Marcil, who lives in the Sherwood Forest Neighborhood, struggled for years with the power company policy for cutting and trimming trees and shrubs in the vegetative buffer that protected and enhanced her property. Typically, the clearing team cut only trees they knew would begin to interfere with the power lines above. But one year a team followed the cutting with powerful herbicides that damaged ornamental plants and trees far from the power lines...
