DAY of SERVICE HISTORY
In 1994, the United State Congress designated the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday as a National Day of Service, encouraging citizens to realize Dr. King’s dream by applying the principles of nonviolence to make this country a better place to live.
In 2009, President Obama, after his historic election as President of the United States, called on all Americans to participate in a National Day of Service to commemorate Dr. King and to take action in our communities to help solve social problems. That January 19th, Americans hosted over 13,000 community service events across the nation. It marked the largest participation in the National Day of Service since its inception 14 years earlier.
Now, in 2012, President Obama is asking us to continue our service towards making America a better place to live. 2013’s Day of Service gives us the opportunity to reflect our belief that,“working together, we can keep moving our country forward and fulfill the promise of the American dream for all families.”
