✨Interested in supporting local families? Become a Safe Families for Children Volunteer!✨

We are looking for volunteers to support local parents currently experiencing a crisis. Here are some ways you can volunteer and get involved:

💛 Provide friendship & support - meet with a parent a few times per month to offer support and a listening ear. Activities could include walking at a park, attending a local event together, etc.

🏠 Provide respite - Host a child in your home for a day or overnight to a give a family in crisis the space they need to stabilize.

🛍 Provide resources - Donate clothing, meals and other supplies to parents in need or volunteers providing care for children.

Looking for a way to support Safe Families for Children?

Safe Families for Children is fortunate to be one of the charities selected for this year's Tigers on the Prowl dinner, live and silent auction on September 11, 2026, starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Wyndham Hotel in Columbia, MO. Hosting children is a large part of the Safe Families model. At times, our relationship begins with immediate an immediate hosting so a parent can prioritize getting back on their feet and providing a safe and stable home.

Other times, relationships begin with a plan for respite hosting so parents can receive the much-needed, family-like support, so NO FAMILY has to parent in isolation without a caring, compassionate community!

These hostings can last from one day to a year, depending on the individual's life circumstances. One parent recently shared with us, "Safe Families is my family now; I couldn't have stabilized my situation alone."

Safe Families for Children seeks to relieve an overwhelmed child welfare system by supporting families before crises lead to separation. National estimates indicate that around 37% of children will face a child-welfare investigation by age 18. About three in four substantiated maltreatment reports involve neglect, and national data show that fewer than half of children exiting foster care reunify with their birth parent or primary caregiver.

Many children remain in care for more than two years, with the average stay nearing 20–22 months. These investigations and removals reflect a system struggling to respond to deep social and economic inequities. Children placed in foster care often experience multiple moves, disrupted relationships, and poorer educational, social, and emotional outcomes.

Safe Families provides an alternative path—one that surrounds parents with caring volunteers and practical support before crisis leads to removal. When parents are supported, and children are safe, families stay together, communities grow stronger, and the public system can focus its attention where it is needed most.
