UWASC VISTA EARNS The United Way Association of South Carolina engages 17 AmeriCorps VISTA members in service activities that address issues related to economic opportunity.

The current South Carolina unemployment rate is 7.1% however, there are 1.4 million unfilled positions available in the Southern United States (Bureau of Labor Statistics). This data indicates that there are employment opportunities available, but individuals lack the education and training necessary to secure these positions. Furthermore, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, 18.8% of South Caroli

nians live below poverty level, which shows that a large percentage of those who are employed are still unable to earn enough to adequately support their family. These economic indicators clearly demonstrate the need to expand services that will increase economic opportunities for disadvantaged individuals. We plan to do this by focusing on three main areas: Financial Literacy, Workforce Development, and Safe and Affordable Housing.
