Most of you reading this don't need to be swayed about not buying bottled water. But something to keep in mind as well: it's not even a good idea to REUSE plastic bottles.

It's generally well known that BPAs can leech out of plastics when left for too long in extreme temperatures. What is less obvious is that the plastics used are often chosen to be pH balanced with their own specific drink (cost efficiency thing).

Powerade is my beverage of choice, not least because the bottles are well made and highly reusable. But it wouldn't be a good idea to put anything except water in it for very long because anything with a drastically high or low pH could react with the walls of the container. This is most relevant for highly acidic drinks such as soda, lemonade, tomato juice, etc.

Moral of the story: invest in something designed to be reusable, and if you can't avoid a plastic bottle or two, recycle it like it's hot. Buying glass is also not a bad option (and is a little more recyclable, but that's another post).

If you want to read for yourself, this article is informative and concise and has some good resources at the bottom.
