Camp Hickory Hill Board Meeting Information

Our next Camp Hickory Hill board meeting will be held on Monday, July 13 at 6:00 PM.

Board meetings are held on the second Monday of every month, and we invite members of our camp community to join. At the start of each meeting, there will be a community comment portion for anyone who would like to share thoughts, ask questions, or provide feedback to the board.

To our campers, families, alumni, volunteers, staff, medical team, donors, and friends,

Over the past several weeks, the Camp Hickory Hill Board of Directors has been working through a detailed review of camp operations and finances, and we have also made some recent leadership changes. That review is ongoing, but we want to be transparent with our camp community about where things stand.

The Board has identified operational concerns, financial irregularities, gaps in documentation, and transactions that require further review. We are continuing to work through those matters carefully and responsibly. At this time, we are not able to share every detail, but we believe it is important to be honest that Camp Hickory Hill is facing a serious financial challenge.

This does not change our commitment to Camp Hickory Hill’s future.

For decades, camp has given children with diabetes a place to feel understood, supported, encouraged, and safe. That mission is too important to walk away from. The Board is committed to doing the hard work needed to stabilize the organization, rebuild trust, strengthen oversight, and position camp to continue serving children and families for years to come.

We are now asking for help from the Camp Hickory Hill community.

There are several ways people can support camp during this time:

Financial support: Donations will help us address immediate financial needs and rebuild a stronger foundation for the future.

Board and committee support: We are looking for people with experience in nonprofit leadership, accounting, finance, legal, fundraising, healthcare, operations, marketing, and camp programming.

Volunteer leadership: We will need dedicated people willing to help with planning, organization, fundraising, communication, and future camp operations.

Community connections: If you know individuals, businesses, foundations, civic groups, or organizations that may be willing to support Camp Hickory Hill, we would welcome those introductions.

We know this is difficult news. We also know how much this camp means to so many people. The strength of Camp Hickory Hill has always been its community, and we believe that same community can help us move forward.

Dear Camp Hickory Hill families, campers, staff, volunteers, and supporters,

We want to share an update from the Camp Hickory Hill Board of Directors.

Following a closed Board meeting, the Board made the difficult decision to end the employment and official operational responsibilities of David and Jessica Bernhardt, effective immediately. Because this is a personnel matter, we will not be discussing the details of that decision publicly.

We know David and Jessica have been closely connected to Camp Hickory Hill for many years, and we understand this news may bring a lot of emotions and questions within our camp family.

We also want to be clear and reassuring: Camp Hickory Hill is not ceasing operations.

The Board remains fully committed to the future of camp and to the mission that has meant so much to children with diabetes and their families for many years. While this has been a challenging season, we believe deeply in the strength of the Camp Hickory Hill community and in the importance of preserving this special place for future campers.

Our focus is on moving forward carefully and responsibly. That includes strengthening oversight, reviewing internal operations, supporting families through this transition, and doing the work needed to put camp on solid footing for the future.

Refunds for the canceled 2026 camp sessions have been started through our registration portal and should be processed back to the original payment method. Timing may vary depending on the payment method and financial institution.

As we look ahead, we also know that Camp Hickory Hill will need the support of this community. In the coming weeks, the Board will be working to identify people who may be willing to serve, lead, advise, volunteer, or help us rebuild for the future. That may include additional Board members, future camp leadership roles, committee support, medical team support, and volunteers who care deeply about preserving this camp for the children and families we serve.

We know there are still many questions, and we will continue to communicate as we are able. We ask for your patience and support as the Board works through the next steps with care.

Camp Hickory Hill has always been about more than a week at camp. It is about friendship, courage, independence, belonging, and helping children with diabetes know they are not alone. That mission is still worth fighting for, and the Board is committed to carrying it forward.
