American women, please hear me with wisdom and discernment.
If you are considering marrying someone from another country, especially from Africa, you must take the time to fully understand what you are stepping into. That includes understanding cultural values, expectations, and how they may influence the marriage.
In some situations, cultural traditions can take priority over Christian beliefs, and that can create serious conflict, especially if both individuals are not aligned spiritually and in their expectations for marriage.
The Bible reminds us in James 1:14:
“But each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.”
This means we must take responsibility for our choices. Yes, the enemy can attack marriages, but we cannot blame everything on spiritual warfare when people are making clear, intentional decisions.
If a husband expresses a desire for another wife in order to have children, that is not something that just happened overnight. That reflects deeper beliefs, values, and choices that does not align with the foundation of a Christian marriage. This tells me the husband has been living a lie while teaching the Living Word. No culture should override the Word of God.
We have to stop excusing behavior and placing responsibility on the enemy when it comes to personal decisions within a marriage. Accountability matters.
While everyone’s experience is different, it is important to move with wisdom, ask questions, and not ignore red flags. Pay attention to patterns, not just promises.
As believers, the only culture we should be striving to follow is the culture of Jesus Christ, a culture rooted in love, truth, commitment, and integrity.
And if you ever find yourself in a situation like this, protect yourself.
First, arm yourself with prayer and seek God for clarity and strength. Second, seek support from a licensed therapist to process what you are experiencing. And third, consult a lawyer so you understand your rights and can make informed decisions moving forward.
I’m not trying to be mean, but for the love of God, please stop letting these naked African men sell you clothes.
