Thank you so much to Girl Scouts Troop 4212, which donated kits that included sheets, towels, pillows, tooth brushes and toothpaste to provide to children when they arrive at the emergency shelter.

The young ladies developed and completed this project as part of their Junior Girl Scout Bronze Award. Their goals was to assist the homeless population, particularly children impacted by homelessness. After learning about Grassroots, they were able to identify an area where they could help meet a need. The troop meets at Waverly Elementary school.

The Grassroots Day Resource Center at Leola Dorsey needs your support to ensure members of our community are fed. Please consider signing up to provide a meal on Monday, June 29, 3:30-6 p.m. to feed 60 people.

Organizations would need to supply a hot meal that is ready to serve (no servers are needed). The meal can be as simple as pizza with drinks, a veggie and simple dessert. Please email Kathy at [email protected] if you can help or if you have questions. Thank you so much for your support!

*The Grassroots Day Resource Center at Leola Dorsey provides two hot meals to more than 125 people each day that we're open. We are so thankful to the organizations, congregations, groups, families and others who support our visitors by providing and serving meals. If you need help, visit the Day Resource Center Mondays and Wednesdays from 2-6 p.m. or Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. You can find us at 10390 Guilford Road in Jessup.

Congratulations to Temple Isaiah on its very successful 22nd Annual MatzohBall 5K and Walk this past Sunday. This annual race benefits both the Temple Isaiah community and local charitable organizations including Grassroots. We were thrilled to receive a very generous donation of $3,093.34 from the 2025 Matzohball Run and to be part of this year’s wonderful event, which saw a record-breaking 406 registered runners and walkers. Thank you to the staff, volunteers and participants from Temple Isaiah and the generous sponsors of the event!

Grassroots needs your help supporting individuals in need in our community. Please donate your reusable or grocery-sized paper bags with handles so we can provide food and pantry items to individuals and families who visit our crisis center in need of vital items. These bags are critical in helping visitors transport the items. They can be dropped off 24-hours-a-day at our Crisis Center at 8990 Old Annapolis Road, Suite A, in Columbia. We do not need plastic grocery bags.

Thank you so much for your generosity and kindness!

Grassroots was profiled on the public television program All Access with Andy Garcia! The feature looks at the prevalence of mental health and su***de risks among our youth and how Grassroots is working to provide support to those who are most in need as one of the most comprehensive programs available to individuals and families seeking help.

You can watch the whole segment here: https://bit.ly/GRAllAccess

Grassroots Executive Director Dr. Mariana Izraelson is highlighted and talks about how 40% of high school students report feeling hopelessness and sadness. There is hope through programs like Grassroots which offer free, 24-hour crisis, mental health, substance use and su***de prevention services. In addition, our partner Mark Luckner, Executive Director of the Maryland Community Health Resources Commission, talks about how Grassroots helps address our needs in Maryland - an increase in access to services while removing the stigma in accessing behavioral health care. Our client Brian also shares his experiences with Grassroots.

We are so honored to be featured in this impactful piece and are hopeful that it encourages more people to seek out important crisis and mental health support! You can watch this feature on public television at the end of 25-minute and 55-minute programs over the course of the next year. Thank you to all of our staff members who helped in making this such a success. We hope you check it out soon!

Grassroots needs your help to ensure we have the items our consumers need when they visit our 24-hour food and hygiene pantry at the crisis center, as well as the food pantry and clothing closet at the Day Resource Center at Leola Dorsey. We also provide meals and meet the needs of 89 children and adults staying in our emergency shelter. If you’re able, please consider hosting a drive for Grassroots or bring by a few items to help us serve the community. We are only able to do this with your support. Thank you so much!

*If you are in need, please visit our 24-hour food and hygiene pantry at 8990 Old Annapolis Road, Suite A in Columbia or the Day Resource Center at Leola Dorsey at 10390 Guilford Road on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2-6 pm and Saturdays from 10 am - 2 pm. We are here for you!

Nearly 4,400 fewer U.S. teens and young adults died by su***de than projected in the first two-and-a-half years of the 988 Su***de and Crisis Lifeline, reported research published recently in JAMA. This is an important sign that this critical program is working to save lives. The study also found that the 10 states that had the largest increase in call volumes following the launch of 988, which included Maryland, saw significantly larger gaps in expected vs. actual su***de deaths.

Grassroots has answered calls, chats and texts to 988 since its inception in July 2022. In addition to supporting callers in Central Maryland, Grassroots also serves as a national back-up call center, supporting texters and chatters across the U.S. Replacing the previous 10-digit number (1-800-273-TALK), 988 was created to provide an easier, universally memorable way to connect individuals with counselors who can support through all sorts of mental health and substance use related crises. Grassroots started answering the previous su***de hotline in 2011.

Su***de deaths among 15- to 23-year-olds were 11% lower than what researchers expected between July 2022 and December 2024, according to the study. Other studies show that after speaking with a trained 988 crisis counselor, individuals are more likely to feel less depressed and less suicidal, as well as more hopeful about the future. More than 11 million contacts to 988 are expected in fiscal year 2027.

If you are in need of support, please reach out to Grassroots and 24 hours a day via 988. We are here to help you!
