Our history deserves more than remembrance. It deserves a future.

The stories of Bucksport, South Carolina, and the generations of African Americans who helped shape its families, churches, traditions, institutions, and community - are part of a legacy worth protecting.

That is the work of the Mishoe Gardner Moore Rawls Foundation.
MGMR exists to help document, preserve, and share this heritage so the stories that shaped yesterday remain accessible, meaningful, and alive for the generations coming next.

But preservation is not something an organization does alone. It happens when families share what they know. When communities protect what matters. When young people discover where they come from. And when supporters believe these stories are worth carrying forward.

Learn the story. Support the mission. Share the legacy.

Visit mgmrfoundation.org to discover more about MGMR and how you can be part of the work.

Preservation takes people.

It takes families willing to share what they remember.
It takes communities willing to protect what matters.
It takes partners willing to help expand the reach.
And it takes supporters who believe our history is worth preserving for the generations still to come.

At the Mishoe Gardner Moore Rawls Foundation, preservation is not passive. It is people coming together to protect stories, records, traditions, and the cultural heritage that helps communities understand where they come from, and what they can carry forward.

There are many ways to be part of that work:
Share a family story, photograph, memory, or piece of history.
Support preservation and educational efforts that keep these stories visible.

Partner with us to create meaningful opportunities that strengthen community and expand impact.
Every story protected.
Every record preserved.
Every generation connected.
Together, we can ensure our heritage lives on.

October is Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Month! 🌊💙

This month, we honor the people, places, language, foodways, artistry, traditions, and resilience that make Gullah Geechee culture one of America’s most treasured living legacies.

From coastal North Carolina through South Carolina and Georgia to northern Florida, generations of Gullah Geechee people have preserved a culture rooted in community, creativity, faith, and an enduring connection to the land and water.

Throughout October, we’ll share the history, voices, traditions, and communities that make the Corridor so extraordinary.

We welcome oona to follow along, share what you learn, and help us honor the culture while protecting its future.

Honor the culture. Celebrate the people. Preserve the legacy.

Heritage is more than what we inherit. It is what we choose to preserve, protect, and pass forward.

The Mishoe Gardner Moore Rawls Foundation exists to ensure the stories, contributions, traditions, and experiences of African Americans in Bucksport, South Carolina and surrounding communities are not lost to time.

Our work is rooted in honoring the people who came before us while creating meaningful opportunities for future generations to understand where they come from, and why that history matters.

Through preservation, education, community engagement, and strategic partnerships, MGMR is helping keep these stories visible, accessible, and alive.

Because preserving history is not about looking backward.

It is about making sure the next generation knows what came before them, and what they can build from it.

We want to hear from YOU. 🌳

Every family in Bucksport has a story; a name passed down, a church, a landmark, a memory at the supper table. Those stories are exactly what MGMR Foundation exists to preserve.

So tell us: what does Bucksport, or this history, mean to you? Drop a comment, tag a family member, or share this post with someone who has a story to tell. We'd be honored to listen.

It's hard to believe how far we've come since this summer. đź’›

We introduced you to our Board of Directors. We shared pieces of Bucksport's story that hadn't been told publicly before. We started building something real, alongside partners like Camp Geechee.

We're not chasing likes or follower counts - we're doing this because the stories of Bucksport, South Carolina deserve to be remembered, and because your grandmother's history is worth preserving for your grandchildren.

There's more coming this fall. Thank you for being part of it from the start.

Did you know Bucksport’s story reaches far beyond South Carolina?

By the 1850s, timber cut and shipped from Bucksport’s sawmills was making its way to New York, Boston, and ports abroad.

Behind that industry were enslaved and free Black laborers whose work, skill, and perseverance helped shape the community, and whose descendants continue to call Bucksport home today.

It is a history worth knowing. It is a contribution worth remembering.

And it is exactly why the Mishoe Gardner Moore Rawls Foundation believes these stories must be preserved and shared.

Bucksport Helped Build the Brooklyn Bridge.

That statement is more than an interesting piece of history. It is a reminder that the impact of small communities, and the people whose labor too often went unrecognized can reach much farther than we imagine.

There are many more Bucksport stories waiting to be told.

Her strategic guidance and thoughtful approach to our brand and communications have strengthened our ability to present our mission with clarity, professionalism, and purpose.

Tracie, your insight, discipline, and commitment to excellence have been invaluable. You approach this work with both skill and heart, and I am deeply grateful for the care you invest in ensuring our message reflects the significance of the heritage we are entrusted to preserve.

If we do not tell our stories, we risk leaving someone else to define them.

Meet Tracie Dean, Brand & Communications Strategist for the Mishoe Gardner Moore Rawls Foundation.

Tracie’s role is centered on helping MGMR tell its story with clarity, purpose, and authenticity, from strengthening the Foundation’s public voice to creating communications that connect people with the history, mission, and community at the heart of our work.

But for Tracie, this is about much more than communications.

It is about ownership of our stories.

It is about ensuring that the experiences, contributions, and legacy of African Americans are documented with the dignity they deserve and shared with generations who deserve to know them.

Her “Why MGMR” captures that commitment:

"MGMR matters to me because our stories deserve to be documented, respected, and shared...not lost, forgotten, or left for others to define.”

Every story preserved strengthens the bridge between where we have been and where we are going.

Please help us celebrate Tracie and the passion, perspective, and communications leadership she brings to MGMR.
