For the month of March, in honor of Women's Month, we will be honoring women who have been vital to the creation, operation and success of our organization.
Mary Jean's Dream is a nonprofit organization that embodies the spirit of community and compassion. Founded by Shakera in loving memory of her great-grandmother, Mary Jean Nance, this nonprofit stands as a testament to the remarkable life and legacy of a woman affectionately known as "Big Mama".
Mary Jean Nance was more than just a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-great-grandmother; she was a cornerstone of her community, a beacon of hope, and a source of unwavering support for those around her. In an era when it was uncommon for women to take on leadership roles within the church, Mary Jean defied the norm by serving as a pastor, inspiring countless individuals with her strength, wisdom, and devotion to her faith.
Her passion for nurturing the next generation knew no bounds. Mary Jean was deeply committed to the well-being and growth of the youth in her community, offering guidance, mentorship, and, most importantly, a comforting presence. She believed in the power of a home-cooked meal to not only nourish the body but also to nourish the soul, ensuring that no one in her midst ever went hungry, physically or spiritually.
At the time of her passing, Mary Jean had left an undeniable mark, spanning five generations of love, wisdom, and service. Today, the legacy she built lives on through Mary Jean's Dream. It's a fitting tribute to a woman whose love was endless and whose impact continues to shine through the lives of those she touched.
