From humble beginnings to an exceptional legacy 🎖

The President awarded Maj (Ret.) James Capers Jr. the Medal of Honor during a ceremony in the White House on Thursday, recognizing his service, sacrifice, and leadership.

Born in Bishopville, South Carolina, Maj (Ret.) Capers is a highly decorated combat Veteran and the first enlisted African American Marine to receive a battlefield commission to officer. He received the Silver Star for "bold leadership, undaunted courage, and complete dedication to duty" for his actions during a 1967 reconnaissance patrol in Vietnam.

A graphic circulating online claiming VA is offering free athletic shoes from major brands has been identified as a scam by the VA national office, as well as our Whole Health program.

Athletic shoes through VA are not available through online offers, brand-selection links, promotional emails or third-party sign-ups.

Shoes are only available by prescription for Veterans with diabetes or to accommodate an orthopedic condition. VA only provides shoes that are medically required.

Veterans should not click suspicious links, enter personal information or provide payment details in response to these posts or messages.

Though women have served in a variety of roles, defending and protecting the U.S. since the Revolutionary War, today is the anniversary of an important step in recognizing those contributions.

The Women's Armed Services Integration Act was signed on this day in 1948, allowing women to serve as permanent, regular members of the military.

Today and every day we honor their bravery, perseverance, and sacrifices for the freedoms we enjoy. Thank you for your service!
