How is consent given?
Consent is given through words or actions that are mutually understandable. Consent is given freely and actively. Consent is given affirmatively, meaning "yes means yes".

How is consent not given?
Consent is not given if it's coerced by force, threats, or intimidation. Consent is not given if it's assumed based on silence, the absence of "no" or "stop", or prior sexual activity. Consent is not given if someone is incapacitated by drugs, alcohol, a mental disability, being asleep or unconscious

Why is consent important?
Consent is important because it helps to prevent sexual assault and other crimes. Consent is important because it helps to respect people's boundaries. Consent is important because it helps to create a culture of respect and safety.

Consent is an agreement between participants to engage in sexual activity. Consent should be clearly and freely communicated. A verbal and affirmative expression of consent can help both you and your partner to understand and respect each other’s boundaries.

Consent cannot be given by individuals who are underage, intoxicated or incapacitated by drugs or alcohol, or asleep or unconscious. If someone agrees to an activity under pressure of intimidation or threat, that isn’t considered consent because it was not given freely. Unequal power dynamics, such as engaging in sexual activity with an employee or student, also mean that consent cannot be freely given.

Silenced Daughters is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was established in South Carolina on April 15, 2021 by domestic violence and sexual abuse survivor, Chantilly Williams. Silenced Daughters' mission is to provide mental, emotional, physical, and or financial support to female survivors of sexual abuse and or domestic violence as they navigate their healing.
