Partners in Sustainable Development International

Partners in Sustainable Development International PSDI promotes and supports the eradication of extreme poverty by empowering families to thrive.

PSDI’s holistic model recognizes that the truly poor face many obstacles in their economic recovery and only a comprehensive program offers them the best opportunity for success. In the model, families provide the labor and determine the direction of the plan while the model provides expertise, resources, technology and training to reach the common goal. The first step is to assess the level of po

verty each family faces as defined by the amount of food that is available to them each day. Most begin the program in a state of partial starvation-only one meal a day. Steps are then taken to see that the family has their most basic needs of shelter, food and clean water. Next, families partner with a social worker to help prioritize their needs and develop an individualized plan for independence. PSDI provides the necessary skills training and micro-finance programs to ensure success. Throughout the process, social workers assess each family’s progress and help make changes if their goals aren’t being met. A family graduates from the program when they are self-sufficient, have assets, savings, clean water, food, shelter, access to sanitary latrines and basic healthcare, income-producing skills and their children attend school. Most families permanently graduate out of poverty within a ten year cycle. The PSDI model has proven to be successful, measurable in its outcomes and is internationally recognized for its sustainability. It is adaptable to any to any part of the world and PSDI has been established to fully support its expansion.

For years, Lakshmi Rani’s family lived with uncertainty—struggling to afford food, education, and even a secure place to call home. Today, a goat provided through PEP and the support of generous PSDI donors, is giving her family new hope for the future.
Lakshmi dreams of using income from goat rearing to keep her daughters in school and one day purchase a small piece of land of their own. Small investments can create life-changing opportunities for families living in extreme poverty.

Meet Khadija Akter, who, thanks to PSDI donors, was provided a sewing machine which she and her husband use to make plastic mats used for drying rice, earning $7-$8 per day after expenses!

This steady income has allowed the family to purchase goats that have grown from two to four and they have recently purchased a cow. The sewing machine has helped Khadija generate reliable income, support her children’s education, and build assets for the future.

She has taken the First Step in lifting her family out of poverty. Support our First Steps Campaign today!

Microloans are one of PSDI’s most effective tools for helping families lift themselves out of poverty—but many of the families we serve often aren’t ready to take that step. Our social workers take great care to ensure loans are only offered to families who are able to repay them. Before they can borrow, they must first build savings. And before they can save, they need a way to earn additional income.

That’s why PSDI provides ultra-poor families with income-generating resources like vegetable seeds, livestock, small business grants for supplies and inventory, and tree saplings. These simple but powerful tools allow families to begin earning immediately, meet daily needs, and gradually build savings.

Decide to join us in providing the First Steps for a vulnerable family in Bangladesh to transform their lives and the future for their children.

It doesn’t take much to change everything for a poor family living in rural areas of Bangladesh.
For a family living in extreme poverty, something as simple as seeds, a few chickens, or small business supplies can be the difference between surviving and moving forward.
Right now, many families are ready to work—but they have nothing to start with.
No way to earn.
No way to save.
No way to move ahead.
Your gift changes that.
With just $500, you can help 5 families start earning income, build savings, and take their first step toward a better future.
It’s not just a donation.
It’s a beginning.

Most poverty alleviation efforts focus on access to capital.
But at PSDI, we’ve learned something critical:
capital only works when families are ready to use it.
The ultra-poor often lack the ability to save—making them ineligible for even the most well-designed microloan programs.
PSDI's First Steps campaign addresses that gap.
By providing targeted, income-generating resources—small grants, livestock, seeds, and tools—we equip families to begin earning immediately and build the savings required to successfully utilize microloans.
This is not a standalone intervention.
It is a strategic entry point into long-term economic independence.

This Mother’s Day, we invite you to honor the women who have shaped your life by giving a gift to a poor woman in Bangladesh in their name. A gift to PSDI is more than a donation—it’s a tribute to your mother, your grandmother, a mentor, or any woman who helped you become who you are today. And it’s a powerful way to stand alongside mothers in Bangladesh who are working every day to build a better future for their children.

Thank you for celebrating mothers everywhere—and for helping turn sacrifice into opportunity.
