The Commission would like to thank every single person who attended Annual Conference on Saturday February 28. From the attendees, to the speakers, to the organization tables, to the staff at Archives & History, the conference would not have been a success without all of you! As mentioned, recordings of the panels and photos will be posted on the Commission's website. Please take a few minutes to fill out the post-conference survey at the link below. Feedback will allow the Commission to improve the conference for 2027.

The South Carolina African American Heritage Commission (SCAAHC) is thrilled to announce it has been recognized with the South Carolina State Library’s Notable Documents Award for 2025 for their independent website. https://www.scaahc.org, launched in the summer of 2025!

The Commission’s commitment to preserving and promoting Black South Carolina history and connecting audiences to that information, specifically through the creation of an independent statewide website was, instrumental in receiving this honor.”

The Commission is grateful to the staff at the South Carolina Department of Archives and History and Beam & Hinge for their passionate work and dedication. This honor motivates the Commission to continue adding beneficial information and resources to the website, with the next goal being a collection focused on the involvement of Black individuals during the American Revolution.

Exciting Announcement!
In the fall of last year, the SC African American Heritage Commission announced the 2026 Book Prize Competition to recognize outstanding original works that contribute significantly to the understanding of the history, art, and culture of African Americans in South Carolina. The Commission is proud to announce The Cost of the Vote: George Elmore and the Battle for the Ballot by Carolyn Click as the inaugural winner!

Honorable mentions for the prize include Margaret Seidler's "Payne-ful" Business: Charleston's Journey to Truth and Claudia Smith Brinson and Cecil Williams' Injustice in Focus: The Civil Rights Photography of Cecil Williams.

Hear author Carolyn Click talk about her research process and the importance of telling Black South Carolina stories and buy all three books at the conference on February 28th!
