Commemorating the closing of historic Booker T. Washington High School

This year 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the mournful closing of the renowned, iconic Booker T. Washington High School, the first high school built for Negro children in Richland County and the second of such in the state of South Carolina. Since its closing in 1974, alumni, family, and friends have gathered in an annual Heritage Weekend Celebration at which scholarships are awarded to descendants of alumni, classes in reunions are recognized, and the traditional John Work Chorus is presented.
Call all BTW Tornadoes and friends!!!

The Booker T. Washington High School Foundation, the BTW Alumni Association, and BTW Millennium Society members in collaboration with the University of South Carolina have planned four events--Thursday, June 27, through Sunday, June 30, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the contemporaneous closure of the BTW High School and establishment of the BTW Foundation. Alumni and the public are invited to participate. The registration for the events is $100 of which a portion will be designated for the Fannie Phelps Adams scholarship fund.

The schedule of events is provided on the event flyer. Registration may be paid using the QR code on the flyer, mailing a check to the Post Office Box (PO Box 1641, Columbia 29202) or paying in person at Trinity Education, Conference and Community Center, 2523 Richland Street, Columbia, on Tuesday, June 25 (11am-1pm).

For further information, send a message to: [email protected].

Our theme for this year's Heritage Celebration is "Commemorating 50 Years of Black Excellence".

Greetings from the BTW Heritage Celebration Committee 2020!

Thank you so much for your support of the historic 2020 Virtual Heritage Celebration, “It’s A Love Thing”! Because you possess the indomitable Washingtonian spirit, you are doing your part which ensures our 45th annual reunion will carry on during this unprecedented time—a tradition unbroken and upheld because of abiding love.

We look forward to seeing you at our second virtual event: the Foundation Heritage and Scholarship Celebration and Fundraiser on Friday, July 31, 7:00pm EST! We will see and hear about “firsts” in our "love" journey with BTW as we honor Classes in Reunion (‘40, ‘45, ‘50, ‘55, ‘60, ’65, ‘70), laud BTW 2020 scholars, invoke BTW’s destiny during the State of the Foundation address, and grow our treasure through gift-giving...all of this will be followed by a live, interactive AfterGlow…a Zoom after party designed for informal, interactive fellowship with classmates, family and friends.

To attend, donation-registration is required; your gift of a $50 donation will serve in lieu of the annual ticket cost associated with this event which replaces the banquet.

Your donation is tax deductible and all proceeds will directly support Foundation programs and operations. We are offering two ways to donate-register: via (1) manual mail-in and (2) online. Further, if you register by Monday, July 27, via Manual/Class Rep or Electronic/online method (see both below), you will receive an additional invitation to join a Zoom Tutorial Session on Tuesday, July 28, 2020, at 6:30pm.

(1) MAIL-IN (MANUAL)

There are 2 easy steps to take for Manual Mail-In Donation-Registration:

1. By Wednesday, July 29, 2020, 6pm EST, register with your Class Representative by submitting your name, best phone number and an email address (it must be an email address that no one else is using; the email address can only be used once). Only one email address may be used per person for registration; the email address must be unique to your registration. Providing this information required by Zoom allows the Committee to manually register you with Zoom. Class Reps should email [email protected] and/or contact Heritage Celebration Chair Kimberly Greene at (703) 867-0356 with their Class Registration Rosters.

2. Mail your donation of $50 (or more) payable to BTWHS Foundation, P. O. Box 1641, Columbia SC 29202; place HC 2020 and an email address in the Memo Line. Ideally, your donation should reach the P. O. Box by Thursday, July 30, 2020. To facilitate/confirm receipt of check payment, please contact M. Lanelle Kohn '68 at (803) 315-0875.

OR
