Here's another peek into the John C. Danforth Collection (C4532)!
Water rights and development are historically contentious. During the 1970's, one of the many projects worked on by the Mississippi Valley Division (US Army Corps of Engineers) and St. Louis District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was the Meramec Park Lake Project.
Here is a response from The United States Department of Justice to John Danforth's letter hoping to prevent legal filings of condemnation actions against Missouri land owners in the project area.

It's not quite a fireside chat, but you can hear native John Danforth's polished speaking voice on his recurring segment, "Keeping in Touch." Typically several minutes long, here is a clip from the beginning of the program.

This episode, from June 18th, 1990, touches on the $169B national debt and the Gramm-Rudman-Hollings proposal for balancing the federal budget.

Does this comic still work? What about with some updating?

We are wrapping up celebrations of our 125th anniversary, and couldn't close it out without mentioning the longest running head of the society!

Floyd Calvin Shoemaker was appointed head of the State Historical Society of Missouri in 1915 and retired as secretary, librarian, and editor of publications in 1960. Responsible for the Missouri Historical Review, he also edited 4 Ozark Folksongs volumes, and wrote extensively about the history of Missouri politics, statehood and people.

This mid-century photo by Cliff Edom, entitled “Historian,” was recently found in the Floyd C. Shoemaker Collection (C4570), during processing. Floyd was searching bound newspaper volumes in the basement of Ellis Library. You can see he pushed up his glasses, just now!

This form letter from the Danforth Collection (C4532) is pure , inviting members of to lunch with the 1985 World Series Champions who had just finished wrapping up the season against the Athletics (formerly of ) earlier that month. We weren't expecting to learn so much sports history in a congressional collection, but this folder even had mention of "George Brett for President"!

Did you know that most periodicals have very acidic paper? Such paper will eventually turn yellow and brittle when exposed to the air. The acidic paper will also damage whatever else is around it, leaving a stain the exact shape of the newspaper clipping, for example.
Here is one such item from the Danforth collection, where newspaper clippings abound. The binder clip which was between the statement and the newspaper left what looks like a reverse shadow.

There's nothing quite like a signed presidential picture!
Unless, of course, it's a presidential goofing around picture!

We don't just have the newspaper clippings either. Here is one of the original letters sent to Danforth from the governor's office. We will let you come to your own decisions on this one!

There's a lot of documents in the John C. Danforth Collection (C4532). And this is almost too much.
1970 was quite a year for "Jack" Danforth. Serving as Attorney General at the time, he got into a heated and public exchange with alum Governor Warren E. Hearnes.
The newspaper articles are a sight to see!
