Board member Virgilio Gozum has been in the community band for ten years and joined after a long hiatus from saxophone due to college and professional school. Some other questions for him:

Occupation in the real world?

“Optometrist.”

Favorite song that community band has performed:

“It’s really hard to choose. I like the songs that really tell a story. For example, “The Great Steamboat Race” is exactly what it sounds like. A tiny little steamboat racing against a giant behemoth. There’s a song “hung aloft the night” that makes me feel small in this universe, yet hopeful for my place in it.”

If you could master any other instrument in the community band, what would it be?

“Easily, trombone. I want to follow people and “wah-wah-waaaah” them when they do something embarrassing or pitiful.”

What does music mean to you?

Music is everything. It is the soundtrack of our lives, the cadence of our stories, the harmony of our souls.

How long have you been in the community band?
Do you have a favorite community band memory?

“This is either my fourth or could be fifth year with the band. My favorite memory is from when I was new to the band and told Charlie, an elder of the trumpet section, that I would miss practices due to work travel. He called me and joked, “You know we have to deduct this from your pay.” Maury County Community Band is volunteer work with no pay! We still laugh and joke about this at rehearsals. I enjoy playing in the community band and look forward to making more memories with the group.”

Favorite song that community band has performed:

“Tennessee Salute” is one of my favorite pieces, along with the Christmas music we play. Jay Dawson wrote the song for the Maury County Community Band and dedicated it to our group. Since this is the band’s 40th anniversary, the board chose to include Tennessee Salute in every concert. I was born in Indiana, but I knew at 13 that I wanted to live in Tennessee. I moved here at 17 and have called it home ever since. I love the pride our band has for Tennessee, and this makes this song special to me.”

If you could master any other instrument in the community band, what would it be?

“I have always been amazed by people who can read and play percussion music. If I could master another instrument, I would choose something in the percussion section. For now, I will keep practicing moving closer to mastering the trumpet 😊”

What does music mean to you?

“Music is relatable. I listen to multiple genres of music, from classical to heavy metal and everything in between. Music is part of my everyday life. I have a long commute, so music is always playing. At home, I also try to keep music on so my grandchildren can grow to appreciate it.”

“I've been in the MCCB for 18 years. My favorite memory was meeting my husband 💕 “

“There are so many, but some standouts are American Riversongs, Buffalo Dances, and The Great Steamboat Race. It's always fun to play Rocky Top in Tennessee Salute. “

If you could master any other instrument in the community band, what would it be?

“Percussion”

What does music mean to you?

“To me, music is what fills up our souls and unites people from around the world. “
