Missourians for Responsible Transportation

Missourians for Responsible Transportation MRT fosters strong communities by aligning advocacy efforts for Missouri's streets, roads, and trails How are we accomplishing our mission?

In 2018, Missourians for Responsible Transportation (MRT) was established by four Missouri organizations: Local Motion in Columbia, Trailnet in St. Louis, BikeWalkKC in Kansas City, and Ozark Greenways in Springfield. They realized that although theyโ€™d been successful with advocacy work in their home cities and surrounding areas, by partnering together, they could help to better address Missouriโ€™s

transportation at a statewide level. We're finding local champions โ€“ communities, organizations, and people who want their towns to grow and prosper and care about the growing need to help people move around safely and responsibly. They will act as a resource for information, strategies, and solutions. We're connecting communities so they can share ideas and collaborate on common goals. When Missourians work with one another to demand systems that works for their communities, we all win. We're amplifying the voices of communities to lawmakers, regional planning commissions, and the Missouri Department of Transportation. We're acting a resource for towns and communities that want to be more bikeable and walkable.

A few weeks ago, the MRT participated in walk audits with the Bootheel Regional Planning Commission and Ozark Foothills Regional Planning Commission in Doniphan and Campbell! These walk audits are a part of a larger State Physical Activity and Nutrition project.

What is a walk audit? Its simple: evaluating places in your community that have good biking, walking, and transit infrastructure and identifying places for improvement. These walk audits will help inform things like active transportation plans for these areas.

Thank you to everyone who planned and participated in these events!

MRT staff had the pleasure of attending the latest ribbon cutting hosted by Gasconade County for a new section of the Rock Island Trail. This marks the first segment constructed outside of a municipality within the state park corridor since 2016. We can't wait to continue to see the progress of this beautiful trail!

BRPC Transportation Planner, Jared Brown pictured with participants in yesterday's "Walk Audit" in Campbell. The Walk Audit sought public input on the conditions of sidewalks, crosswalks, and other active transportation elements within the city's road transportation infrastructure. Thanks to all that participated including partners from Moving Missouri, Trailnet, and Missouri Department of Health, and the City of Campbell. A special thanks to the City of Campbell Police Department for providing an es**rt to keep the walkers safe from traffic.

Missouri transit funding isn't finalized yet.

Thanks to legislative action, $2.5 million in Capitol Commission Funds and $1.7 million from the State Transportation Fund were included in the final state budget for transit operations. This funding now awaits the Governor's signature.

Missouri's investment in public transit is already among the lowest in the nation, and transit providers across the state rely on these funds to connect people to jobs, healthcare, education, and essential services.

If public transportation matters to you, now is the time to make your voice heard. Contact Governor Kehoe and encourage him to preserve the transit funding included in the final budget before June 30.

Comments can be made at https://governor.mo.gov/contact-us/mo-governor or by calling 573-751-3222.

Together, we can help ensure Missourians have access to reliable transportation options in every corner of the state.

Check out this article where our Policy and Programs Director, Jackson, talks about Jefferson City's passing of the "Idaho Stop Laws", allowing bicyclists to treat stop signs as yield signs and stop lights as stop signs.

"'I just want to applaud the City Council for making this consideration and taking it upon themselves to do the research to get there,' said Hotaling, who spends much of his time cycling in the city. 'To be able to have a beautiful downtown and have place that's enjoyable and safe to walk and bike around, I think it can really inspire a lot of folks in smaller towns and suburban areas to think about what that might look like when they do visit the Capitol.'"

Public transit connects Missourians to jobs, healthcare, education, groceries, and community in rural and urban areas alike. But Missouri transit systems continue to face major funding challenges after significant state cuts over the last two years.

Our latest blog breaks down the proposed FY2027 transit budget, what it could mean for communities across Missouri, and how you can share your thoughts with Gov. Kehoe and state leaders.
