Presenting President Washington: Commander in Fluff 🇺🇸

With his magnificent fluffy coat and distinguished appearance, Washington certainly looks presidential. 👑
And judging by his good looks, we expect he'll have quite a few supporters lining up at the polls. If you're interested in this handsome candidate, we encourage you to come meet him in person!

Washington is currently on stray hold until June 23rd. If he isn't reclaimed, he will become available after that date. Rescues may inquire via the email below, while adopters must visit the shelter in person.

While President Washington has all the makings of a great leader, he's currently facing a bit of a constitutional crisis. Shelter life has left this young statesman feeling overwhelmed and uncertain. He isn't quite ready to hit the campaign trail just yet. He can be nervous around new people, pacing anxiously and searching for the nearest exit. While he was amenable for leashing, he needed encouragement to walk and was tolerant when carried. Once given a little time to decompress, Washington allowed gentle petting and even showed brief moments of engagement and curiosity.

Come cast your vote for Washington. 🗳️

Choo Choo! Thomas has arrived at the shelter station! 🚂

Thomas came to the shelter with Gail and four 7-month-old puppies (Louise, Thelma, Fisher, and Frannie). Is Thomas the dad? We may never know for sure, he definitely looks the part. 👀

Sadly, according to the finder, this entire labby family was allegedly dumped from a vehicle and left behind. They all deserve a much happier ending than that. But on a brighter note: Lab lovers, your train has arrived!

Thomas may be active and vocal in his kennel, but once outside, he transforms into a calm, easygoing guy. While momma Gail is busy inspecting every sight, sound, and snack, Thomas is more of a “Netflix and Chill” kind of guy.

He's treat-motivated, knows how to sit (kind of), walks decently on leash, and has a friendly, laid-back personality.

All aboard for Thomas! 🚂

🎵 Louie, Louie... oh baby, we gotta know!
Louie, Louie... where'd your family go? 🎵

Louie came to the shelter as a stray, but his story doesn't quite add up. He arrived already neutered, microchipped, heartworm negative, and in excellent condition. Someone has clearly loved this boy, cared for him, and spent time teaching him his manners. So why is he still here? 🤔

Louie was found near the 2100 block of Leesburg Road. If you know him, recognize him, or think he may belong to someone you know, please help us get the word out and bring this boy home.

While he waits, Louie is doing his best to stay positive. He's friendly with people, loves treats, and has quite the résumé. This smart senior already knows sit, down, and shake, walks nicely on leash, and appears to be house-trained. Though listed as 7 years old he’s still got plenty of pep and loves playing with tennis balls. So again we ask, why is he still here? 🤔

Louie would love a home where he can be your shadow, your sidekick, and your constant companion. Whether you're watching TV, doing chores, or relaxing on the couch, Louie is ready to clock in for his favorite job: being with his person. While he hasn't had a formal dog assessment yet, we suspect he'd be happiest as the one and only King Louie of his castle. 👑

🎵 Louie, Louie... said we gotta go... HOME! 🎵

The sky's the limit for Skylan! ☁️

Skylan came to the shelter as a stray. Because of that, we don't know whether she's lived with other dogs, cats, or children. Her stray hold ends tomorrow, June 20th, at the end of the day. If she isn't reclaimed, she will become eligible for foster, adoption, or rescue placement. If interested, we encourage you to come spend some time with her!

Right now, Skylan's head is a bit in the clouds. The shelter is a busy, stimulating place, and she finds all the sights, sounds, and activity incredibly fascinating. What was especially nice to see was that despite all the commotion, Skylan remained calm and non-reactive. With so much happening around her, Skylan can sometimes struggle to focus on her handler. But once she's removed from the chaos and given a quieter setting, she settles and is eager to connect.

Skylan is treat-motivated, already knows how to sit, and takes treats gently. She walks well on leash, has been friendly with people, and has tolerated basic handling. True to her shepherd roots, Skylan is smart, attentive, and looking for a purpose.

So if you've been searching the skies for your next best friend, Skylan just might be your silver lining. ☁️

“I refused to take no for an answer” - Bessie Coleman

Our Bessie is also not going to take no for an answer! She is hoping you see her and shout “yes” into the skies and fly off with her!

Bessie came to the shelter a little nervous and she would cower in submission. But since, then she's completely opened up and all we can say is....woah Bessie! 🐄 This small/medium size pup with a furry coat who enjoys the world every second it has to offer! She loves to play chase and gets the best zoomies! Life is too interesting to sit or focus for treats right now, she just wants to play-play-play!

“Tell them that as soon I can walk, I am going to fly!”

“Betty I won’t make assumptions…” 🎶
(Cue our Swifties out there….)

Poor Betty is currently feeling quite miserable - she is battling a nasty case of kennel cough, and it has stolen all of her energy. During her outing, she mostly just wanted to lie quietly under a bench, resting and conserving her energy. She overheats easily, feels crummy, and clearly isn't herself. And yet... despite feeling so awful... if you sat down on the ground, she'd slowly army crawl her way over for affection. 🥺

Betty walks nicely on leash and has the gentlest soul. She was polite when other dogs stopped by, even perking up to say hello through the fence before settling back down to rest. Sweetness comes naturally to her, even on her worst days.

Right now, Betty would benefit from a medical foster where she can recover in comfort. We can only imagine how much brighter her personality will shine when she's healthy again. She is also eligible for adoption or 501c3 rescue transfer.

For now, Betty is asking a simple question:
"Would you have me? Would you love me?"
We sure hope someone says yes.

Once upon a shelter dreary, came a stately Raven weary... 🐦‍⬛

Raven arrived at the shelter as a stray. As a retired mama dog, all of her babies have since flown the coop. Now it's Raven's turn to find a family of her own—and be homeless nevermore.

Raven walks nicely on leash, takes treats gently, and is curious about toys. But if given the choice between treats, toys and your affection, she'll choose you every time. Raven is an affectionate girl who will happily perch right beside you and lean in for pets. If stop petting her for too long, she'll politely remind you with a gentle paw.

Raven does have some dry skin and could use a deep condition and some good nutrition. But that's a small task compared to the endless affection she'll repay you with.

And while Raven sits patiently in her kennel, one can't help but wonder what she's thinking:
"Will I find a forever family? Will I watch another person walk away?"
Till I scarcely more than muttered, "Other friends have flown before—
On the morrow they may leave me, as my hopes have flown before..."
Then the Raven said, "Nevermore." 🖤

Giddy up and meet Cowboy! 🤠

Cowboy came to the shelter as a stray on June 16th. He is currently on hold until June 22nd. If not reclaimed, he will be eligible for foster, adoption or 501c3 rescue pull after that date. If you’re an interested adopter you’re welcome to come to the shelter to spend time with this charming young buckaroo!

Cowboy can be a little shy at first but he's easy to leash and loves moseying over for pets and attention. While he's still getting learning the ropes of leash walking a little encouragement goes a long way. Cowboy is curious about other dogs and will sound the hound alarm when he wants to play.

So saddle up partner and come meet Cowboy! 🐴

Sound the senior alarm! 🚨

Sadly, the shelter has seen an influx of senior dogs lately. And unfortunately, seniors are often overlooked in favor of younger pups. But if you're searching for a calm, loyal and loving companion, you're looking in the wrong direction if you pass them by.

Meet Hawthorn — a sweet senior with the kind of quiet charm that only comes with age and experience. He's easy to leash and handle. He was calm and unbothered in the busy shelter lobby. No drama. No chaos. Just a good boy taking everything in stride.

Hawthorn appears to be house-trained — he took care of business as soon as he got outside. He knows how to sit, loves treats, and accepts them with manners. The hardest part of our time together came at the end. When it was time to return to his kennel, Hawthorn pancaked in the hallway and didn't want to go back. Can you blame him? After enjoying fresh air, companionship, and a brief taste of freedom, the shelter felt especially lonely. 😢

Senior dogs like Hawthorn face some of the toughest odds. Yet, they're often exactly what people say they want: calmer energy, established manners, and overflowing with gratitude.

If you believe gray muzzles deserve golden years, Hawthorn is waiting to meet you.

Buster says it's time to bust a move...
right out of the shelter! 🕺💃

Buster came to the shelter as a stray, and while he's still a little unsure he's doing his best to be brave.

This handsome shepherd is nervous of new people and is initially a bit wary of touch. But with a little patience, some treats, and gentle reassurance, Buster starts to relax. He already knows how to sit, takes treats politely, and seems eager to connect with people once he's had a chance to build some trust.

Buster walks nicely on leash and enjoys exploring the world at his own thoughtful pace. In his dog assessment, he was polite and tolerant with other dogs. While he wasn't interested in playing, he calmly allowed the helper dog to approach and sniff him, choosing instead to focus on exploring the yard and minding his own business. His finder stated he did do well with their dog and he appears to be house trained.

Beneath his cautious exterior is an intelligent and loyal dog who simply needs a little time to settle in and feel safe. We have a feeling that once he does, he's going to shine.

So come on and bust Buster out of here!
