With support from CFAF, 130 Columbia Falls High School students experienced a performance by Opera Montana this year. Students enjoyed hearing the performers greet the audience in their native languages, finding out how they got into music, and learning a native song and dance. The Sonifers performed for the group as well, and engaged in a thoughtful Q&A. One of the Opera Montana performers is the niece of Sonifers creator Ron Bond, so there was also conversation about him and his musical legacy at CFHS.

Even we want to take Family and Consumer Sciences at Columbia Falls Junior High these days! This year, a CFAF grant supported the Culture and Cooking unit, where 7th graders study and cook something from each continent, and 8th graders study four US regions, Canada, MT, and Native peoples, and make something from each area or culture studied. 7th grader Quinlan Cincis observed that the CFAF grant helped a lot with supplies, and allowed students to cook more interesting foods. 8th grader Clare Cooley said the grant made her FCS class more informational, helping her to learn about many different cultures and cuisines. During the year, the 7th grade also does a milkshake challenge, and 8th grade does a food truck challenge, with CFHS students returning to CFJH as judges. CFAF also purchased new saucepans for the FCS classroom this year.

With support from CFAF, 24 Columbia Falls High School students traveled to Missoula for this year’s Academic World Quest event. For two days, they engaged with diplomats and academics in discussions about current topics affecting the world, studied national and international policy, laws, and issues, and competed with other teams on knowledge tests. Sophomore Chloe Kinsella called the event a great way to keep her mind connected and stay involved during the winter months! (Students were also given these very cool sunglasses commemorating the event😁)

You might not expect high school kids to be working with DNA—but this year, more than 100 CFHS biology students got hands-on experience with gel electrophoresis, a technique for separating small molecules that’s often used in genetics. The experience was made possible by a $2,600 project grant from CFAF, which paid for the supplies for this genetics exercise and two others. The equipment can be used at CFHS year after year, and being familiar with it will help future STEM students arrive at college already knowing their way around a microbiology lab!
