The Community Foundation of Whitley County is excited to announce that we will be granting $5,000 to Erin’s House for Grieving Children. This donation is made to help support the organization's programming for Whitley County residents.

Erin's House is a nonprofit in Fort Wayne that provides free grief support services for those in need. The organization primarily serves children and young adults through programs and resources including Peer-Support Nights, caregiver support, quiet spaces, camps, and retreats. The Community Foundation of Whitley County is excited to share that Matthew 25, Inc. will receive a $4,000 grant to support their organization's services for Whitley County residents.

Matthew 25 Health and Care is a faith-based nonprofit health care center that provides crucial services to low-income or uninsured adults. Located on Jefferson Boulevard in Fort Wayne, the center offers medical care, preventive testing, physical therapy, dental care, vision care, and mental health services to qualifying adults. This scholarship was established in honor of Timothy D. Hearld, who was a beloved coach, mentor, and member of the Columbia City community. Tim was a devoted husband and father of three who valued hard work, community service, and making a positive influence on others. This scholarship continues Tim’s legacy of positivity and dedication in the community by supporting a student with similar values.

The Timothy D. Hearld Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a graduating Columbia City High School senior who has participated in at least one sports season. The recipient should also have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Special consideration is given to students with financial need.

This scholarship was established by Georgia Tenney, a lifelong Pierceton resident with a deep love for Whitko Schools. She spent over 30 years as the Middle School Secretary and now serves on the school board. Her late husband Bob Tenney shared her wildcat spirit and retired as a custodian for the school system. The scholarship is intended to support Whitko graduates for generations to come.

The Tenney Family Scholarship is available to any Whitko student within two years of their graduation. The award is specifically intended to assist individuals who plan to pursue vocational education for a career in the skilled trades. These careers include but are not limited to automotive technology, carpentry, collision repair and refinishing, culinary arts, esthetics/cosmetology, manufacturing, patient care, and welding.

This scholarship was established through a gift from the estate of Susie Waugh, who was a lifelong Whitley County resident and homemaker. She and her husband, Leigh, operated a family farm and received awards for their farming initiatives. This scholarship is intended to assist students with similar passions.

The Susie and Leigh Waugh Scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior from Columbia City High School who plans to pursue a baccalaureate degree in agriculture or FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America).

We are excited to share that Blessings in a Backpack is partnering with The Community Foundation of Whitley County, Parkview Whitley Hospital, and United Way of Whitley and Kosciusko Counties to assist children who may experience food insecurity during summer break.

Beginning June 5th, Blessings in a Backpack’s Summer Feeding Program will distribute nearly 3,000 bags of nonperishable food in Kosciusko and Whitley counties this summer.

"Adequate nutrition is the cornerstone of every child's development - and we can't expect our kids to play and learn at their best when they're hungry,” says Dr. Andrew Piropato at Parkview Whitley. “...I am so thankful to the community partners that quickly came together to provide this vital service for the kids in Whitley County.”
