Big news for USS New Jersey (SSN 796).
The boat has officially completed Post-Shakedown Availability and is back in Navy hands.
If you have ever wondered what PSA actually is, here it is in plain language.
After a submarine is built and commissioned, it goes to sea and the crew puts it through real operations. That is where you learn what needs to be adjusted, improved, or upgraded.
PSA is the planned shipyard period where that work gets done.
It is not a setback. It is part of the process.
The name can throw people off too.
“Availability” does not mean the boat is available to deploy. It means the ship and the shipyard are set up and ready to do the work.
For New Jersey, that work included upgrades, maintenance, and system refinements that prepare the boat for what comes next.
This milestone reflects a lot of people:
The crew who took her to sea
The shipbuilders who brought her back in and did the work
The Navy teams behind the scenes
The families who supported all of it
It is a proud moment, even if it is a quieter one.
The boat has taken another step forward.
