On May 7, 2026, a M4.0 mainshock struck 17 km south-southwest of Weston, Colorado — shallow, at just 8.7 km depth. Shaking was reported as far as Pueblo, Santa Fe, and Taos. That is a felt-radius stretching hundreds of miles from a mid-magnitude event.

Investigation traced the disproportionate surface intensity to the San Luis Valley's deep sedimentary basin — a structure that amplifies shallow-focus seismic energy in ways that deeper hypocenters simply do not produce. The USGS confirmed this as the likely mainshock in a sequence of eight events recorded since April 20, nearly all clustered in a narrow zone near the state line, suggesting movement along a single fault or connected fracture network beneath the Sangre de Cristo corridor.
