sted in the fossil fuel industry, promoting the status quo of profiting from unethical investments. Under your leadership, our college can join the growing number of institutions around the world making the choice to invest sustainably, so as to protect the current and future health of the global population, the planet, and the long term success of the endowment portfolio. We call on Colorado College to fully and clearly disclose all its fossil fuel investments and divest from the fossil fuel industry within five years. College campuses are known for their scholarship, progressivism, and innovation. Colorado College is no exception to this, recognized as the most innovative liberal arts college in the United States. To uphold its institutional values of innovative imagination, adventurous learning, and lifelong leadership, it must invest responsibly and sustainably. By removing its assets from the fossil fuel industry to invest them in renewable energy funds, Colorado College would be leveraging its political power as a nationally prominent liberal arts college to stigmatize the use of fossil fuels and promote renewable energy innovation.

A landmark United Nations report paints a far more dire picture of the immediate consequences of climate change than previously thought and says that avoiding damage requires quickly transforming the world economy.

Fossil Free CC is proud of Colorado College for taking action against the glorification of someone like William Slocum, an abuser and sexual assaulter. We are happy to be tigers today.

In the fall of 2017, members of the Colorado College community raised allegations that William F. Slocum engaged in sexual misconduct while he was president of the college. President Jill Tiefenthaler fully investigated this matter and then brought it to the CC Board of Trustees for their considerat...

Hey! If you're interested in learning more about the impact of divestment from fossil fuels by colleges, check out this Huffington Post article. We challenge you to challenge the status quo!

"The goal of getting universities to divest isn’t to financially burden fossil fuel companies; it’s to tarnish their image."

“The idea was basically to shift cultural attitude,” he said, noting that institutions that divested from Big To***co influenced the national perception of the industry. “Americans see cigarette companies in this certain way that’s really negative."

It's not about the money.

Why is it appropriate to use the dining halls to encourage sustainability and divestment from fossil fuels, but not the endowment?

"Activists have urged divestment for what you might call moral reasons: if it’s wrong to wreck the planet, it’s wrong to profit from the wreckage. But pension funds are willing to divest because they’ve come to believe that the future is not about coal and oil and gas—that these are now on the decline. The future lies elsewhere." -Bill McKibben

Divestment is no longer simply about ethics and morals--there is a compelling economic argument for shifting to a sustainable endowment.

As fossil fuel resources diminish globally, remaining invested in such resource extraction is unwise. The rapid expansion of the sustainable energy sector is exciting--both from an environmentalist's and an economist's perspective. We are approaching a tipping point in the economic viability of fossil fuels--Colorado College, as an progressive institution, should be leading the pack in shifting the larger economy towards sustainability. We must go fossil fuel free.

Why go fossil fuel free?

In recent years, forest fires and droughts have ravaged the west at unprecedented rates. Hurricanes and other natural disasters have crippled coastal communities with remarkable frequency and intensity. Global temperatures have increased in correlation with rising carbon emissions. Climate change is real and must be addressed immediately. Colorado College's large and growing endowment remains invested in the fossil fuel industry, promoting the status quo of profiting from unethical investments. Under the current leadership, our college can join the growing number of institutions around the world making the choice to invest sustainably, so as to protect the current and future health of the global population, the planet, and the long term success of the endowment portfolio.

In short, we are calling on Colorado College to divest from fossil fuels. We must take institutional action on global climate change and manage our finances responsibly, sustainably, and ethically.
