The Military Artistic Healing program was created as a response to the unmet needs of a new generation of American combat veterans returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan after being exposed to multiple traumatic events and the MAH treated effectively the hard-to-treat symptoms of combat stress. Traditional forms of therapy were not always achieving meaningful results. The Colorado Springs Fine A
rts Center and Pikes Peak Behavioral Health Group (now named AspenPointe) started the first 11-week course titled “Military Creative Expressions.” The initial participants were stationed at Fort Carson and suffered from a variety of physical and invisible wounds, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury. Since then several changes including the program’s title changed to “Military Artistic Healing”, additional sessions to meet the needs of active duty military family members, fallen soldiers’ families, and all branches of veterans from past wars who are still struggling with the similar traumas and head injuries.
