Angel Wings Rabbit Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) non profit status pending organization founded in 2015. We are dedicated to providing compassionate skilled care to elderly and disabled domestic rabbits in a nurturing environment. 100% of all donations go directly towards the care of each rabbit by providing them with the necessary veterinary care, toys, fresh greens, hay, pellets and bedding they ne
ed. Our organization is run entirely by volunteers. AWRS was founded by Rita Storms who began her work with various rescue organizations that ultimately led to her joining a 5 year project to save over 500 domestic rabbits on the Long Beach City College campus, providing them with spays, neuters, veterinary care and then placing them in approved adoptive homes while educating the public about the dangers of pet abandonment and the benefits experienced through the proper care of a house rabbit. In 2015 she formed the Angel Wings Rabbit Sanctuary organization in order to more effectively focus on caring for disabled and senior rabbits and support rescues by helping to alleviate the need to take in these special needs animals. Most of the sanctuary rabbits have come to us due to abandonment or they were set for euthanasia in the shelter due to their age or disability. These particular rabbits hold a special place in Rita’s heart. She believes that while they certainly require extra care they are by no means “unwanted”. We strive to accept each rabbit that needs us while balancing the commitments we make to provide only the best medical and emotional care of our current residents. Each rabbit that is accepted into the AWRS organization is given a thorough veterinarian examination and provided with any necessary medical care. Once their condition is stable they are spayed or neutered and given the best housing and care possible to enrich their lives. In our program some rabbits will live the remainder of their lives as an AWRS resident, and others will go to approved adoptive homes. The goals of AWRS:
1) To rescue, rehabilitate and provide skilled care for elderly and disabled domestic rabbits.
2) To provide educational materials about the special needs of disabled and elderly rabbits
3) To facilitate adoptions and save lives.
4) To work as an outreach program in the community by providing therapy rabbits (examples: visiting local hospitals, children’s centers, schools, convalescent hospitals and hospice patients).
5) Providing volunteer opportunities to groups and individuals.
6) Maintain a website and page.
7) Answer phone calls and e-mails.
8) To promote spay and neutering in the community to reduce the population of homeless rabbits. We are grateful to each and every person who is a part of our sanctuary community.
