Hopefully we will see more of this at our local bases

Specialist Moses Brave Heart of the South Dakota Army National Guard received a religious accommodation from the U.S. Army. The Oglala Sioux soldier can now grow his hair long and wear traditional Sioux head decorations including an eagle feather for official Army portraits. He follows the Army female grooming standards for length and style. Brave Heart began growing his hair out after the approval came through in 2023.

This step means a lot for Native soldiers who want to serve while staying connected to their culture. Brave Heart shows quiet strength by standing up for his identity in the military. His story highlights growing respect for Indigenous traditions and opens the door for others to seek similar accommodations. Many in Native communities see it as progress toward true inclusion.

This victory celebrates the beauty of honoring who you are while defending your country.

Turtle Mountain & Spirit Lake challenged North Dakota's legislative voting map and a federal judge agreed with the tribes stating the map violated Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. Later the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that private citizens and tribes can't sue under Section 2 but that only the federal government could bring those lawsuits. Over the last 40+ years almost all Voting Rights Acts have been brought by voters, Tribal Nations and civil rights organizations and not by the federal government. If this ruling is upheld then this would be a significant blow to the VRA and could jeopardize our ability to challenge discrimination in remapping of districts or other attempts to limit representation.

The U.S. Supreme Court has returned a closely watched Native American voting rights case to a lower court for reconsideration following recent changes to how the Voting Rights Act is enforced. The decision could impact how future voting rights lawsuits are handled, including challenges involving state legislative maps and minority representation.

Lililililililili Margo!

In the days ahead of Pikes Peak State College’s commencement ceremony, graduating student Margo Condon would be the first person to tell you she didn’t think she’d be there two years ago.

A 42-year-old, first-generation student who sustained a brain injury during her time in the military, she admitted that she only began attending because her son was doing so elsewhere in Colorado.

A member of the Cheyenne River Sioux tribe in South Dakota, Condon is among the first recipients of PPSC’s First Nations Promise to graduate. https://buff.ly/8oXQePc

The army captain's letters and testimony helped unmask efforts to hide the massacre's brutal truth behind a facade of frontier myth

One of the very few local Native owned businesses was vandalized yesterday with the words “white power” across their windows. This is a Southern Ute woman owned bead store and she was targeted for that since most of the other stores vandalized didn’t have racist content. If you can send her some support it would be great. Swing by & get some beads or take a class. Let her know she has community love!
