Big Dog Daddy aka Pops had his dental the other day. This just show the importance of teeth needing done at least once a year (checked every six months for older horses like him) as four years ago we had his teeth done, but it appears that he hadn’t been done since. If you look closely at his tongue and his cheeks in the pics you can see so much trauma and ulcers on both sides of his tongue and on both cheeks. His points were so sharp he literally was bleeding in his mouth on his cheeks when we first looked in there. Could you imagine how painful that is for them with every time they chew? Those sharp points cutting into them with every bite. He also needed two of his teeth pulled as they were loose and could cause problems for him if not removed. A lot of the horses we take in have never had teeth done or so infrequently that their mouths are a disaster when our vets first looked in there. It’s also important for them as it can cause weight loss and behavioral issues.
This is why every horse we take in gets their teeth done right away.
