Some people assume buying secondhand is about saving money.

For me, it’s about something much bigger.

My goal is to buy, trade, barter, repair, and reuse whenever I can. Not because I have to… because I believe it’s one of the simplest ways we can care for the world we leave behind.

Every item we rescue from a landfill is one less thing manufactured, packaged, shipped, and thrown away.

Every trade builds community.

Every reused item gets another chance to be appreciated instead of discarded.

If I woke up tomorrow with a million dollars, I’d still be wandering thrift stores, swapping with neighbors, and hunting for hidden treasures. Not because I couldn’t afford new—but because I believe the best purchase is often the one that’s already been made.

Every item we keep in use is one less item that has to be manufactured, packaged, shipped, and eventually thrown away.

Here are a few reasons swapping matters:

🌱 42% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions are linked to producing, transporting, and disposing of the goods we buy. Choosing used helps reduce demand for new products. (US EPA)

👖 Making one pair of jeans can use around 1,800 gallons of water. Buying them secondhand saves those resources from being used again. (colorado.edu)

🧥 Americans throw away about 17 million tons of textiles every year. Much of it still has plenty of life left. (US EPA)

🚛 About 11.3 million tons of textiles end up in U.S. landfills each year. Reusing clothes, shoes, linens, and fabric helps keep them out of the trash. (US EPA)

💰 Buying secondhand often saves 30–50% (or more) compared to buying new—and sometimes you can trade without spending a dime.

💚 Every toy, lamp, craft supply, piece of furniture, kitchen gadget, or pair of jeans that finds a new home is one less item headed to the landfill.
