"As researchers warn of a looming mental-health crisis due to COVID-19 — a recent report by the Centers For Disease Control (CDC) & Prevention found that 11% of adults reported seriously considering su***de in late June — the city’s mobile crisis unit has pivoted to connecting with people in new ways over FaceTime or Zoom, Jones said," says Philadelphia Inquirer.

Incidents related to mental health account for 10% of all police calls, raising questions about whether it’s more beneficial to have trained crisis workers deal with mental health related situations.

"Perhaps the most visible element set to arise from the budget are new street-crisis response teams — specialized crews tasked with responding to mental health emergencies," says San Francisco Chronicle. "Currently, that’s a responsibility that falls largely to the police department. While the city does have several dedicated teams focused on addressing street homelessness and behavioral-health incidents, the street-crisis units would be the first to be solely dedicated to responding to 911 dispatches for mental health emergencies," they continue.

Over the next two years, San Francisco’s proposed budget envisions spending nearly $76 million to begin implementing Mental Health SF, a sweeping vision of reform that includes creating new street-crisis response teams.

"Sometimes mental health professionals respond to calls along with law enforcement officers; other responses pair officers with social workers to provide case management services to people who frequently interact with law enforcement," says The Council of State Governments Justice Center. "In some of the best models, people who have experienced homelessness or mental illness themselves are engaged as peer navigators," they continue.

Local law enforcement agencies are increasingly encountering unsheltered homelessness and mental health crises. States can help.

"The conversation around defunding police has included a debate on whether law enforcement should be responding to calls involving a person’s mental health," says WKSU. "In Northeast Ohio, there have been incidents – some fatal – involving police response to people experiencing a mental health crisis. But there are ways mental health experts and police are working together," they continue.
