It's time to plant in the Pikes Peak region, and we've got what you need!

Stop by this weekend for locally-grown vegetable starts, herbs, flowers, and more! We've got tons of heirloom varieties (think interesting colors/stories, non-GMO, and able to save seeds) and some great flowering perennials and ornamentals to please the pollinators.

SEE you this weekend!

SEE loves growing potatoes, and we’re trying something new this year! Instead of sowing potatoes into our typical garden beds or raised beds, we’re growing in straw. Since we’re not yet planting potatoes, we added a thick layer of soil on top of the straw pile, to keep it from blowing away. This should make the harvesting process a lot easier - no digging required (which means no accidental slicing) and the fully grown potatoes won’t need as much washing.

The west side of SEE’s garden is home to our raspberry patch, as well as an assortment of perennials (plants that grow back each year). Once the warm weather settles in, this side of the garden can become a beautiful smorgasbord of grass and weeds, especially thistles (pokiest of pokies). In an effort to suppress weeds without using chemicals and add organic material to the soil, we sheet mulch these areas. This involves laying cardboard, watering it, covering it with at least 4” of mulch, and watering once more. Seeds can and will land on top of this mulch and grow, but we can at least keep some undesirables at bay!

Our Farm & Livestock Committee member, Jen, is taking great care of hundreds of baby plants! In addition to veggies and food crops, she’s also starting some locally-adapted perennials to help draw in pollinators and increase the diversity of the garden. We’re eagerly anticipating the last annual frost date of ~May 10th so we can put these babies in the ground!

The very very last of our 2023 crop came out of the soil on March 30th, 2024! Carrots were seeded towards the end of last year’s growing season, then mulched in generously and covered with frost cloth. They overwintered with green tops, and tasty orange roots. 🥕🥕🥕

“Season extension” is something that’s been done at the SEE garden over the past few years through the use of cold frames and other strategies - what’s your favorite way to grow and harvest into the cold months?

The SEE garden is almost ready for planting! Thanks to the dedicated crew of volunteers who braved some cold winds (followed by some sun!), we were able to top dress beds with compost, prep a potato patch, sheet mulch a perennial section, and harvest the last of the carrots!

Upcoming days will be announced via social media and email - keep an eye out for the next opportunity to get your hands dirty!

We’re updating our volunteer onboarding process to make things a lot easier and paperless!

To volunteer:
On our homepage (www.seecos.org), click “Learn About Volunteering”
Fill out our General Volunteer Intake Form
We’ll email you to confirm we’ve received it, and you’ll be notified via email about upcoming volunteer dates!

For garden volunteering, you’ll **no longer sign up** to attend a volunteer day. Rather, we’ll share volunteer dates via social media and email, and you can simply choose which days you’d like to come help!

Volunteer shifts will be at least 2 hours long. All volunteers must have a current liability waiver and handbook/policy acknowledgement on file before volunteering.

Our Farm & Livestock Committee members have been hard at work getting the “seeding chamber” ready for this season’s crops. We're excited to have access to much more indoor (garage) space than before, and will be able to seed/start more than ever!

So far, broccoli, spinach, and leeks have been sown, with more crops scheduled to be started in the coming weeks! SEE plans to make vegetable starts available to the public too - more on that soon!

Our garden, classes, and community events are all made possible by the hands and hearts (and sweat and hustle) of volunteers! This year, SEE is looking for folks to help in so many different capacities to help support our mission of reconnecting our community to each other and to the natural world.
