As September winds down, we are looking back with full hearts.

This month our volunteers gave haircuts, our partners opened doors, and our neighbors reminded us why this work matters. Every cut was a small act of dignity, and together they add up to something a whole community can be proud of.

Thank you to Westside CARES, Food Trucks Against Homelessness, Because We Choose To, and every barber and cosmetologist who gave their time. October is already calling, and we cannot wait to keep showing up.

Same mission, same heart, one haircut at a time.

36 services were done today for our neighbors. We stood and listened. We stood and laughed. We stood and heard stories about life.

Dylan paused for one of our neighbors to take a call for an interview! She came back and told us later she has a second one later AND she brought her husband over with her so they both could say thank you to us. What he said next meant so much to her. He said our goal is to help you succeed so that we don’t need to see you out here. She said she feels so much more confident with her haircut and ready for that next interview ❤️

What we do out here is so much more than a cut. It’s connecting and loving on people.

Remember that.

We stood with our neighbors today at Antlers Park. We heard stories and shared laughs. But one thing that always makes me smile is the community. The people that come together and stand with each other for moments of peace and conversation. Just to say I see you.

My friends Chase and Carletta provided 34 services today. Fresh cuts and beard clean ups. Allowing our neighbors to get back to work, on a bus (I got a story from a neighbor today on this one) or just to say thank you for the monthly cleanup.

It’s been a season of healing for me and as I step back from cutting because of it, I have learned to ask more questions from our neighbors. To collect more stories. To see things differently. It has been beautiful.

I challenge you to do the same. Be intentional with your friends, with your neighbors, with yourself! It’s been a pretty amazing experience to walk differently in a place I didn’t want to be. I wanted to just be behind the chair. Now I get to walk the line, the park, the circle is being widened. Let’s go ❤️

None of this works without the barbers and cosmetologists who show up, scissors in hand, ready to give their time for free. They could be booking paying clients. Instead they choose a folding chair, a paper cape, and the chance to change someone's whole day.

To every volunteer who has ever worked a shift with us, thank you. You are the reason a stranger walked away feeling human again.

Yesterday we were out with Foodtrucks Against Homelessness. My friends Dylan and Chase provided 23 services to our neighbors in need.
We get to hear stories while they are in the chair and I get to walk and talk with the neighbors since I am unable to cut right now.
One of the stories the neighbors told me was about a time she was walking to the store and another neighbor asked her for a smoke. She said walk with me and I’ll give you one, that’s where I’m headed. He did. They had conversation and after she gave him one, she said “we are all in this together”. She said 3 years later she was walking to another store and 2 men were sitting behind the store she was approaching and a guy said “are you… and she said yeah with a confused look on her face”. He proceeded to tell her that she saved his life that morning 3 years prior. What she said next was shocking to her and to us. Just before she walked up, that man had decided he was going to end it by stepping in front of a semi truck and then she walked up. That changed his life.
So, today we need to remember “we are all in this together”

Today is National POW/MIA Recognition Day, when we honor the prisoners of war and those still missing in action, and the families who wait for answers.

We also remember the veterans who made it home but are still fighting for stable ground. On a single night in January 2025, 32,495 veterans in America were experiencing homelessness. Though this number is showing a trend of decrease, there is still much to be done. These are people who served, and too many now sit outside the very communities they defended.

At Broken Crayons Beauty, we believe a haircut can be a small act of respect. A way to say thank you, we see you, and you still matter. To every veteran we have had the honor to serve, and to those we have yet to meet, we are here.

A haircut is never just a haircut.

For someone sleeping outside, it can be the first time in weeks that a person has touched them with kindness instead of walking past. It is a mirror moment that says you are still you. It is the confidence to walk into a shelter, a clinic, or a job interview with your head a little higher.

We hear it in the quiet thank you at the end. We see it in the shoulders that finally drop when someone relaxes in the chair. This is why we do what we do.

Restoring dignity, one haircut at a time.
