Colorado Avenue - one of the iconic Main Streets of Colorado Springs - comes alive during Territory Days in when this historic avenue returns to being a place devoted to people. For the first time, Colorado Ave will remain more people-focused long after the festival tents come down, thanks to a year-long Demonstration Project launching June 1st!
This 12-month pilot project aims to calm traffic and bring long-term vitality to the Westside corridor by putting people first.
Here’s what’s happening:
🚗 Vehicle lanes will be reduced from 4 down to 2, plus a center turn lane, between Limit & 31st Streets 🚶♂️ New pedestrian crossings and refuges will make the street much easier to cross on foot
🌳 Asphalt in Old Colorado City is being reclaimed to create more pedestrian spaces making room for more community life
Where are the Bike Lanes?
🚲❌ Decided as part of the Midland Transportation Study finalized in 2022, no bike lanes are being added to Colorado Ave during this pilot, in favor of retaining vehicle parking. While neighborhood side streets are great, they don't offer direct access to the businesses, cafes, and restaurants along our historic main street. True multi-modal safety means welcoming people on bikes right to the front door.
Because this is a temporary test, community feedback over the next year will shape the permanent multi-million dollar reconstruction that is expected to start in 2027.
Let’s celebrate the walkability wins, and keep pushing for the connectivity we need!
