Although due to rules and regulations, those juniors or cadets under the age of 16 cannot participate in actual emergency calls, their help around the station is invaluable to the squad. At Colonial Beach, the education of our junior members is a continuous process and extremely important for the squad's success. All junior members that volunteer for us are encourages to seek certification as an E
mergency Medical Technicians - Basic level within a year of starting their membership. They have the option of being trained as an ambulance driver, and becoming an Attendant-in-Charge while running calls. It may be possible for a junior to continue past EMT-Basic certification, and continue their schooling to become a Paramedic. The Colonial Beach Juniors have their own Officers, and hold regularly scheduled monthly meetings. They are directed by our Junior Captain of Operations, Kaila Worrell along with several Senior Advisors. Since the early 70’s CBVRS has sponsored a successful junior program. Many former juniors have gone on to have very successful careers in the EMS field including professional Firefighters, Paramedics and even an Emergency Room Physician. Because continuing education is so important, CBVRS has affiliated with the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads to open up many scholarships available to junior members as graduation from high school nears. The VAVRS has a complete listing for all scholarships for deserving juniors who meet the respective criteria. You will find applications to download and complete for the Kimball L. Glass Memorial Scholarship, the Julian Stanley Wise Memorial Scholarship, the Fred E. Weymouth II Scholarship, the Garry Clatterbuck Scholarship, and finally the Trula Peach Scholarship.
