Junior Guides Rafting Summer Camp

Junior Guides Rafting Summer Camp The leader is Whitewater rafting kids programs & building our river community since 2010. California & Oregon. Our Jr.

Kids age 6-16, Camp Counselors, Internships, parent work trade, Scholarships. Our summer day camps teach river safety and provide fun for youth, ages 6-18, how to safely play on our most dynamic playground, the South Fork American River. We value adventure, teamwork and leadership

Program designers, river guides, and parents Sarah and the late founder Spencer Rubinfield want to share river cultur

e with you. We strive to instill these values in our own children and our program:
•ADVENTURE Nothing beats being on the river during the warmest part of summer. Who doesn’t enjoy the splash of cool water and the thrill of running rapids? It is our hope are that our programs will instill a love of nature and adventure that last a lifetime.
•TEAMWORK Rafting is a team sport. The entire river trip requires the cooperation of the group. Our on water activities and games encourage cooperation, build confidence and ultimately enhance self-esteem. Lasting friendships are formed when people play outside together and have a shared sense of purpose.
•LEADERSHIP Because the river is a dynamic system, leaders are needed to model safe water behaviors. We help students create a voice, incorporate feedback from their peers, and learn to communicate in a respectful way, as they direct their teammate’s actions in the raft. Our dynamic program is designed for individuals with basic swimming skills, who have little or a lot of rafting experience, who desire fun and camaraderie with other folks in the Coloma Lotus valley. Guides Summer Programs take into account varied skill sets, and support you at your level. For example, younger campers will spend more time tossing Frisbees while floating downstream, while older ages will get increased time spent steering the raft.

BOARD BIO we are thrilled to have Scott on our Board of Directors! When Scott Valentine was introduced to whitewater rafting in the mid 90’s he was saved from becoming a destitute rock climber. As a whitewater guide, he learned he could get a free lunch and live in a tent if he could safely take people down the river. He was a traveling raft guide for many years and even managed a whitewater company in Coloma before finally using his college degree to restore streams and meadows with the US Forest Service. He now runs the Earth and Environmental Science Department at Lake Tahoe Community College. He also spends a ton of time raising two young Junior Guides, restoring the biodiversity of montane meadows, engaging with indigenous communities about fire ecology, and helping the youth of today become whitewater guides…instead of dirtbag rock climbers. All very noble causes! He claims he may be the first (and quite possibly the last) person to have ever gone through the Tunnel Chute on the Middle Fork American on a boogie board.
