🇺🇸 AMVETS POST 35 – IN MEMORY OF GARLIN ISSAC PAINTER 🇺🇸

It is with great sadness that AMVETS Post 35 recognizes the passing of our longtime member and friend, Garlin Issac Painter, who passed away on August 29, 2026.

Garlin spent many years as part of the Post 35 family, and we are grateful for his years of membership, friendship, and support of our Post. The people who make up an organization over the years become part of its history, and Garlin will always have a place in the history and family of AMVETS Post 35.

On behalf of our officers, veterans, members, and the entire Post 35 family, we extend our deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to Garlin's family and friends during this difficult time.

Please keep his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers as they lay him to rest.

Garlin's graveside service will be held Friday, September 4, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Roselawn Burial Park, 103 Clearview Drive, Martinsville, Virginia.

Thank you, Garlin, for your many years with AMVETS Post 35. You will be remembered. 🇺🇸

It is with a heavy heart that Amvets Post 35 announces the passing of our friend, fellow AMVETS member, and respected community leader, Martinsville Sheriff Steve Draper. 🇺🇸

Sheriff Draper dedicated his life to serving and protecting others. His many years of leadership and public service included serving as Chairman of the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission, Chairman of the Dan River Alcohol Safety Commission, Past Chairman of the Piedmont Regional Criminal Justice Training Academy, and Former President of the Virginia Sheriffs’ Association.

But to us at Post 35, Steve was more than a Sheriff or a list of accomplishments—he was one of our own. He was a proud AMVETS member, a friend to our veterans, and someone who genuinely cared about the community he served.

Steve's passing leaves a tremendous hole in our community and within our AMVETS family that will be felt for the foreseeable future.

Our hearts and prayers are with Steve's family, friends, the men and women of the Martinsville Sheriff's Office, and everyone whose life he touched during this incredibly difficult time.

Thank you, Sheriff Draper, for a lifetime of service to others. Your watch may have ended, but the impact you made and the legacy you leave behind will not be forgotten.

Rest easy, Sheriff. We will miss you. 🇺🇸🙏

Jeff is at the Train Expo at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds TODAY from 10 AM–4 PM! This is the first show Jeff has had this close to home, and several of our members have already stopped by to show their support.
