Rome built an empire through conquest and collapsed under its own tyranny. America chose a different path. Morrisey traces how the Northwest Ordinance answered Montesquieu's great warning — creating an "empire of liberty" that expanded self-government westward rather than imposing colonial rule.

The Revolution did not just divide a country. It divided a father and a son.

Most Americans know Benjamin Franklin as a Founding Father. Fewer know his only surviving son chose the other side. William Franklin was the royal governor of New Jersey. When the Revolution came, he remained loyal to the British Crown. The Continental Congress had him arrested in 1776. He was imprisoned, then exiled to England. Benjamin Franklin largely excluded him from his will. They never fully reconciled.

Some of the highest prices paid for the Revolution were never paid on a battlefield.

He walked into church as a pastor. He walked out as a soldier. Three hundred men followed him.

In 1776, most men of the cloth stayed at the pulpit. Pastor Peter Muhlenberg did not. He believed liberty was not just a political cause. It was a divine one. On January 21, 1776, he reportedly stood before his congregation, finished his sermon, and removed his clerical robes to reveal a Continental Army uniform underneath. He told them there is a time for everything, a time to preach and a time to fight. Three hundred men walked out behind him. He went on to serve as a brigadier general under Washington at Valley Forge and Yorktown.

He did not just preach it. He proved it.

He shocked the church! No one in the congregation knew what he was about to do.

He stood at the pulpit and finished his sermon. Then he reached up and removed his clerical robes. Underneath was a Continental Army uniform.

He told his congregation there is a time for everything, a time to preach and a time to fight.

Our founder, actress Janine Turner, wanted to capture something bigger than one man’s decision. The clergy of the Revolution believed liberty was not just a political idea, but a divine one. Pastor Muhlenberg did not just preach that belief.

He put on a uniform to prove it.

Memorial Day, which is observed on the last Monday of May, commemorates the men and women who died while in the military service. In observance of the holiday, many people visit cemeteries and memorials, and volunteers often place American flags on each grave site at national cemeteries. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time."

When the tradition began in 1868, the original order called on Americans to honor “comrades who died in defense of their country” and to cherish “the memory of our heroic dead.”
