Today's Verse

When the trials and tribulations of life strike the people of God, they may be tempted to wonder if God is in charge. When opposition from the enemies of the people of God seems overwhelming, they may be tempted to question if God is really in control. Does God not know what is happening? Does He not see everything that is going on? And if He does know and see, then is He not able to do anything about it?

The message of Isaiah to the people of God in his time and to the people of God for all time is this: when the Lord makes up His mind, there is nothing in heaven or earth that can either change to its own liking or nullify that plan. And when the Lord raises His hand in order to carry out His plans, no power in heaven or earth can stop Him or turn Him aside.

Given this, the people of God should take comfort. No matter what their situation may be, however dire and grim, the Lord is in control. His plans shall endure. The forces of darkness may form plans and schemes of their own, but they are not able to stop or override what the Lord has ordained. The Lord is lord of the Armies of Heaven. There is nothing that can stand against Him and His angelic host.

The people of God may then rest assured that what they are going through could not happen unless it was part of His plan and unless His wisdom prevailed. God has a purpose in everything He does, and His providence directs all things by His purpose. Although we may question God’s purpose at times, we also know that He “causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them,” (Romans 8:28).

If there is anything in the way of God’s plan and purpose for you, it will be cast down. If there is anything that needs to happen to fulfill His plan and purpose for you, it will be lifted up.

Nothing can change His plans; nothing can stop Him.

The sacrifice of Jesus Christ was a more perfect sacrifice in comparison to the sacrifices made under the Mosaic Law. Jesus Christ’s sacrifice was the reality, whereas Mosaic sacrifices were mere shadows of the reality.

Under the Mosaic Law, priests could only enter the earthly Holy of Holies in order to make atonement for sin. Jesus, in contrast, was the great High Priest who entered heaven itself in order to make atonement for sin (Hebrews 4:14).

Further, under the Mosaic Law, blood sacrifices had to be repeated year after year and could never make anyone perfect before God. The sacrifice of Jesus, in contrast, was a once for all sacrifice that could actually make people holy (Hebrews 10).

Given the superiority of Christ’s sacrifice, we may have great confidence in Him and His priestly intercession for us. We may come before God boldly. We have been made holy by Christ’s sacrifice and, as a result, we may approach God without any fear. Although once we were far away from God, we have now been brought near (Ephesians 2:13).

When Christians come boldly to the throne of our gracious God, we will receive His mercy. That is, we will receive His pardon for any sin that still remains in our lives. Since Jesus Christ paid the penalty for our sins, we may come before God and receive the mercy that is ours by virtue of Christ’s sacrifice.

When Christians come to the throne, they will also receive His grace—His blessing and help for outstanding needs. The grace we receive will help us “when we need it most.” When we come before God, we may boldly ask for help during the trials of life, and we may expect God to help.

If you have felt timid and unworthy when coming before God in prayer, then let today be the day you start to come boldly and expectantly before His throne of grace.

We lost power in a terrible windstorm recently. The lights—and heat—were off for nearly 24 hours. It was a very long, dark, and chilly night in our house. When I woke up the next morning, it was a brisk 51 degrees in our house. When I said good morning to my wife, I could see my breath! The worst part of the whole thing was that I had to sleep without my fan! I’ve slept with a fan nearly every night of my life since I was just a little guy. The silence of the darkness was deafening!

There is something terribly frightening about darkness, isn’t there? Have you ever lost power at night and you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face? Or have you ever visited a cave and they turned out the lights? You experienced real darkness, didn’t you? Have you ever ridden “Space Mountain” at Disney World? There are parts of that ride that are very dark and you just cannot see what’s going on around you. Darkness can be so scary! This is especially true of spiritual darkness.

We were all prisoners of darkness at some point in our lives. We were living in the kingdom of darkness because of our spiritual blindness. But God has rescued us from the darkness by His grace through faith in Jesus. God has brought us out of the darkness and into the Kingdom of His Son. Jesus has opened our eyes and removed our blindness. We no longer walk in darkness, groping about and searching for hope. We can see clearly—not because of the sun—but because of the Son.

Friends, there are many who still live in darkness. They actively rebel against the Lord Jesus. They are darkened in their understanding of the life God desires for them (Ephesians 4:18). They need the light of the Son to shine into their hearts so that they will be released from darkness. We have the flashlight! We walk in the light as He is in the light (1 John 1:7) and now we must show others the way.

In my house the lights eventually came back on. For many, many people—people whom we know and love—the spiritual lights have yet to come on and they’re still living in darkness. Let us shine the light of the Son of God into the darkness that they might be rescued and brought into the Kingdom of the Son.
