Turning rain into smiles. No one was able to hit a golf ball at the 23rd Annual Coach Blair Charities Celebrity Golf Classic on Friday, but the event along Thursday night's dinner featuring live and silent auctions helped set a record for money raised to benefit Special Olympics.
"This is the most money we've ever raised," retired A&M women's basketball coach Gary Blair said. "Bryan-College Station continues to step up to the plate. People believe in what we're doing for special needs kids and they just believe in the Special Olympians and their families."
Blair Charities is helping send Special Olympians from Bryan-College Station School Districts and the Aggie Bombers from ages 18 through 80 who are participating in Special Olympics to all the state tournaments and even nationals to showcase their athletic skills. Coach Blair Charities help provide uniforms, transportation costs, meals and an annual banquet. This is something Blair takes pride in supporting. He did this for 10 years in Arkansas before he came to A&M.
They raised $102,000 from Friday's live auction, which included 10 items, most of them dinners with A&M coaches along with a fishing trip to Louisiana. Blair tries to keep it as local as possible. The silent action will bring in approximately $40,000.
More good news is donations are continuing to roll in.
Blair said the community's support has been "mind-boggling" considering how many great charities there are.
"We are just one of the many that needs the community support," he said. "This community it just keeps stepping up."
Even though people couldn't play golf at Traditions Club, they showed up to support the cause.
"They just believe in what we're doing," said Blair, citing all the live and silent auction items donated by local businesses.
This was the third time in the last four years the golf tournament has dealt with rain. Blair believes the Farmer's Almanac needs to use him as a source.
"They can tell farmers they just do all their seeding just before Blair's tournament and it works," Gary said. "I'll be able to take of everybody."
