Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society

Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society A non-profit equine welfare organization dedicated to helping starved, abused, abandoned and estray

Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society is a nonprofit rescue organization and equine welfare community. We rescue, rehabilitate, retrain, and rehome horses from neglect and abuse cases, horses who have been abandoned, and horses whose owners can no longer keep them. Fueled by a growing community of owners, caretakers, and equine-related specialists, we offer owner assistance programs that help owners ca

re for, and keep, their horses. We also assist with disaster relief efforts and provide educational opportunities to improve the quality of horse care in Texas and beyond.

“A holistic approach to equine care not only improves the health of the horse but also enhances the emotional bond between the animal and its caretaker.”
Dr. John J. Krai, a veterinary behaviorist

“Strong, informed communities are essential for advancing ethical standards and fostering a culture of care within the equine industry.”
The Equine Welfare Alliance

Our community uniquely provides a vital network of empathy, understanding, and encouragement fundamental to fostering a sustainable and joyful relationship with horses and other equines. It has been well documented that when we immerse ourselves in a community that nurtures our interests, we do not merely pursue our goals; we excel in them. And we become more resilient, more dedicated, and ultimately, more successful. Our community is not merely a network of rescuers, horse owners, or equine enthusiasts but instead a sanctuary of compassion, a center of knowledge, and a beacon of holistic support for both horses and their caretakers.

Important info about New World Screw Worm.

New World Screwworm (NWS) is a serious parasitic disease that can affect horses, livestock, pets, wildlife, and, in rare cases, people. Early detection is critical.

Be sure to regularly inspect your animals for:
- Wounds that aren’t healing
- Draining or enlarged wounds
- Maggots present in wounds or body openings
- Signs of pain, depression, or decreased appetite

If you observe suspicious wounds or maggots, contact your veterinarian immediately. Prompt treatment and reporting are essential to protecting animal health and our agricultural community.

An update on the guy we took in earlier this week: the edema in his legs is going down and his anemia is improving. His appetite is good and his caretaker says he wants to climb into her pocket.

His condition is still guarded, but we are hopeful.

Non Pro Under Saddle Division Post 4

The Non Pro Under Saddle division is the biggest division of the Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge, and we're so grateful for each participant this year! We're still working out some assignments, so I'll update this list soon with a few more people and horses. And because Facebook doesn't like me to tag too many pages in a post, I'm going to have to make a few different posts for this division.

Welcome our very first vendor to the Bluebonnet Horse Expo & Rescue Horse Training Challenge on October 3rd in Taylor, Texas:

The Rusty Rein Tack Shop will be set up in the vendor hall at the Expo & Challenge for the first time this year. She'll have new and used tack and horsey-themed gifts. She's also donating a matching headstall and breastcollar for the silent auction - thank you, Jennifer!

I cannot wait to see what all she has to offer.

Reposting with photos:

In May, we were criticized for not taking in owner donated horses who were lame or feral.

I responded that save those spaces for when our law enforcement partners called. And some folks still felt the need to be ugly.

But today when one of our law enforcement partners called, we could jump in.

We picked up an older horse who is 1.0 in body condition. He also has pitting edema in all four legs and is critically anemic.

He is at the vet's now and his condition is very guarded. I am hoping we can pull him through. Your donation can help with his veterinary bills.

Thank you to the ACO who handled his case, the volunteer who trailered him, and out vet for taking him in.

I will post photos as soon as I get them from his vet.
