Congratulations to our Brother Dr Arthur Watson ๐ค๐พ
This February, we proudly continue celebrating the achievements of our Black alumni whose excellence, leadership, and perseverance reflect the spirit of Henderson State University.
โจ ๐๐ซ. ๐๐ซ๐ญ๐ก๐ฎ๐ซ ๐. ๐๐๐ญ๐ฌ๐จ๐ง, โ๐๐ & โ๐๐ earned his Bachelor of Arts in Communications (2000) and Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (2003) from Henderson State University before going on to earn his Ph.D. in Educational and Organizational Leadership from Texas A&M University in 2016.
During his time on campus, Dr. Watson was deeply involved in student life. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Angelic Voices of Christ (AVOC), Heart & Key, the Confederation of Black Students (now the Black Student Association), and the Reddie Ambassadors. He also served as a student worker in the Presidentโs Office under Dr. Dunn, gaining firsthand experience in leadership and university administration.
Dr. Watson chose Henderson after attending Heart Start, where he immediately felt at home. The welcoming environment and strong school pride drew him in and confirmed that HSU was the right place to begin his journey.
Several faculty and staff members made a lasting impact on his life, serving as mentors, counselors, and sources of inspiration. He credits Vikita Hardwrick, Wanda Harris, Eula Thomas, and Dr. Alvin Futrell for their guidance and influence during his time at Henderson.
Reflecting on how his time at Henderson helped shape his success, Dr. Watson shared: โHSU shaped my trajectory by giving me an opportunity to start my career in higher education. I started working at HSU after graduation as an admissions counselor. I later became the coordinator of the career center and finally a counselor in Educational Talent Search, before I moved to Texas A&M University. The folks I mentioned above showed me how fulfilling a career in higher education can be and guided me along the path to doing so.โ
Today, Dr. Watson serves as the Assistant Provost for Student Success & Transition Academic Programs at Texas A&M University, leading initiatives that support first-generation, transfer, and undergraduate student success and impacting thousands of students each year. He is also active nationally, presenting at major higher education conferences and serving in leadership roles with organizations.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Watson remains deeply committed to service. A member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. since 1997, he continues his involvement through alumni leadership and community service efforts. He also serves on the board of the Brazos Valley Food Bank and is active in his local church.
Reflecting on what Black History Month means to him, Dr. Watson shared:
โBlack History Month is an opportunity to celebrate the contributions Black Americans have made to societyโboth nationally and internationally. While it is part of overall American history, this month is an opportunity to spotlight the many contributions Black people have made throughout history and continue to make. It is especially important in this day and age, when many want to erase or turn a blind eye to our true history.โ
Dr. Watson, we are proud of your continued leadership in higher education and grateful for the example you set for future generations of Reddies. ๐คโจ
