Congratulations to Rusty Dunn, a longtime resident of the Gulf Coast Council and now an active member of the Texas Council, on being a recipient of the FFI Casting Board of Governors annual recognition awards.

George “Rusty” Dunn, CI, was presented the Casting Instructor Certification Program Instruction Recognition Award. Rusty has been an active instructor and member of the Acadiana Fly Rodders Club in Louisiana and founded the Louisiana Reel Recovery Retreat Program there as well. He also co-founded “Good Fly” where he and others raised funds to offer free casting workshops. He was also instrumental in creating The Round Up 2023 in Texas, which brought about 200 fly anglers together at this two day event, which also focused on the value of becoming a FFI certified casting instructor.

The remaining casting awards - Lifetime Achievement and Mel Krieger Awards - will be announced and presented with other annual recognitions at the FFI’s Board of Directors Award Ceremony on October 18, 2023.

Up coming Reel Recovery Retreat for the Brazos Valley is scheduled for May 1-3 at Camp Allen near Navasota. Any man who has ever been diagnosed with any type cancer can attend for no cost. Go to Reel Recovery website listed in article and sign up.

I can’t say enough about what Reel Recovery means to me. Watching these guys come here each year, and for a short time, forget their struggles. Hearing them laugh with each other and watching them enjoy the meals we cook for them (some of them really eating for the first time in a long while, even back through the line for seconds).

The participants pretty much steal our heart each year, and we cry every time they leave. They are brave men! Fighters! Gentle Giants! Hero’s to us all here at Cedarwood Lodge. If you, or a man you know is struggling with cancer, or even in remission for years, then check out the website below.

Their is no charge to the participants, so money is not an object. Everyone who works with the retreat, donates their time and talents, because we all have a huge soft spot in our heart for these guys!
