BREAKING🚨🏳️‍🌈 In red Texas, a black trailer filled with lavender shelves and disco balls stocks the exact books the state keeps BANNING from school libraries.

Carabiner Collections started in the summer of 2023, when three transplants to Bryan, Texas drove home from a visit to Sacramento's Lavender Library and decided to build their own. "We're just three random people," co-director Jordan Gignac said. "The government can't stop us from giving out free q***r books."

They hauled books to community events on carts until the carts kept breaking under the weight. A grant through John and Hank Green's Project For Awesome paid for the trailer bookmobile.

The library is fine-free, so you can check out another book even if you never bring the first one back. Last month they opened their first physical space, in downtown Bryan.

What they're filling in for: the Cypress-Fairbanks district near Houston automatically opts its 114,000-plus students out of more than 10,000 titles. In New Braunfels, more than 600 books have been pulled from schools using a restrictive AI program. And last month Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said he'll push legislation to knock a school's accountability rating down a full letter grade if it doesn't remove books he called "dirty" or "filthy."

"There's a big wave of librarians standing up and risking losing their jobs," co-director J Turpin said. Some of them quietly donate the removed books to groups like Carabiner.

In September 2025, the Trump administration issued a memo targeting nonprofits opposed to it, including groups supportive of trans people, and broadly accusing them of "terrorism."

Turpin said it's the closest the group has come to feeling threatened. All three co-directors still keep their names and faces on the website.

Their Pride book fair in June drew more than 500 people. At their first Pride event, Daniel Handler, better known as Lemony Snicket, handed out free books and paid for the food truck.
