Friends of the Battalion

Friends of the Battalion Friends of The Battalion began to promote the long-term sustainability of The Battalion student news Currently almost none of the workers are paid..

Friends of The Battalion is a non-profit organization formed in the summer of 2019 to help stabilize the financial viability of the student-run newspaper at Texas A&M University. Membership is open to everyone who supports student journalism, objective reporting and civil discourse, including non-journalists and non-Aggies. Former staffers look back to their days at The Battalion as the springboar

d to their widely varied careers. Like all publications, The Battalion is facing difficult challenges in increasing costs, deep budgets cuts, dwindling advertising revenue and transitions to the digital age while maintaining its journalistic excellence. The Battalion is currently a national finalist for daily newspaper of the year by two different organizations, as it has been for three of the past five years and was named Newspaper of the Year in 2015-16 by the College Media Association. Traditionally, students have been paid small salaries for their work. Many students rely on this income, and if they don’t have it, they may have to find part-time employment elsewhere and are unable to practice their craft and pursue their profession. There is no longer a professional advertising manager, and without that position, the Battalion is now only publishing once a week. Friends of the Battalion believe we must reverse this trend, and we ask you to join our efforts by making a tax-deductible donation today.

Top-level Texas A&M officials added me to a Facebook group chat discussing plans before the attack on the University of Texas’ campus that occurred on March 15, 2025. During this attack, t.u. mascot and beloved bovine Bevo was killed by an airstrike commanded by a group of Corps of Cadets members ...

The notification was one of a million. She let it sit for a moment before grabbing the phone and bringing it to her face, expecting nothing more than a question from her co-worker or a response from the student she was helping. But the email — sent from Texas A&M’s Office of Open Records —...

Our official Giving Tuesday is in the next 24 hours - have you made your donation to Texas A&M Student Media and The Battalion yet?

Here's 10 behind the scenes reasons why you should consider a small donation for our Giving Tuesday campaign to send our student editors/leaders to the 2025 Associated Collegiate Press Spring National Media Conference in Long Beach, California.

Help us continue our momentum into 2025 and move the needle forward on becoming one of the top-tier college student media outlets in the country!

Reason #1-The Aggieland Yearbook has been financially revived and is in a favorable contract, fully staffed, and has a renewed culture of excellence being built.

Reason #2-Our student-led business team is creating new parternships with 12th Man and is being innovative in revenue approaches for our operation while staying fiscally responsible.

Reason #3-We just distributed a little over 9,500 Maroon Life Magazine Rivalry magazines to 100+ campus locations, in addition t0 70+ hotels, for the A&M vs. TU game with a student-led distribution "street team" within a week and a half.

Reason #4-We have put in months of time and effort restoring our digital archives with Cushing Library for The Aggieland, The Battalion, and Maroon Life Magazine.

Reason #5-We have created a multimedia room with a full RODE podcast set to encourage more journalism and media-minded students to join Student Media.

Reason #6-We are winning national awards almost weekly through multiple scholastic press organizations for our writing, design, photography, business operations and more.

Reason #7-Leadership within the Division of Student Affairs is noticing a difference in the quality of content, reporting, and overall reach of Student Media on campus and with students.

Reason #8-The newsroom has become more inclusive (through the testimony of new students working for The Battalion) and students are using the newsroom as a space again to hang out between classes, study, etc.

Reason #9-We have improved our relationship and payroll procedures with the Student Organization Finance Center. We are better tracking student pay, getting students paid faster, and utilizing new tools and resources to better analyze one of our largest student media expenses, staff payroll.

Reason #10-We have built a case for a second position within Student Media, a program manager, and the position has passed two levels of approval within the Division of Student Affairs. We are hopeful the position will be funded, which will provide a second adviser for the 2025-2026 school year.

I would be happy to answer any questions you have. Please email me at [email protected] to schedule a phone call, Teams meeting, or even a coffee sometime if you are on campus!

Here's your chance to take those 10 reasons to 100 more!
