The East Point 55+ Empowerment and Enrichment series reconvenes on October 2nd.

Come out for a lively, interactive Active Aging discussion, led by Laura Kelly, MS, CTRS, who founded her professional organization as a vehicle of empowerment for adults aged 50+.

Ms Kelly will engage with you and also present on dimensions of well-being, including such areas as neuroplasticity, maintaining connections within the community, and leisure and exercise for older adults.

Having been a Division II student athlete and co-captain of the women's basketball team, Ms Kelly experienced an impactful event during her first semester of college, when her father survived a massive stroke and her familyโ€™s world was turned upside down. He had been devastated by the limitations of his stroke, consumed by what he could not do. Incredible physical, occupational, and speech therapists worked diligently to help him regain function on his right side, improve his communication skills, and walk again. Her mother, a devoted caregiver, also experienced immense physical and psychological challenges. Ms Kellyโ€™s familyโ€™s experience empowered her to dedicate a career starting recreational therapy programs in venues where they had not existed.

Individuals living in long-term care facilities deserve high-quality person-centered care, to experience quality of life, and be treated with dignity and respect. Consumer Voice surveyed residents of long-term care to find out what life is really like for them on a day-to-day basis. We asked questions regarding whether they are treated with dignity, have access to technology, and the issues that impact their daily life like staffing, food, and activities. We also asked questions about whether they are able to live life on their own terms.
