On this day in 1865, enslaved men and women in Galveston, Texas, finally learned of their freedom: two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
Juneteenth 2025 marks 160 years since that delayed but powerful moment of liberation.
As Mary Elliott, Curator of American Slavery, reminds us:
“Juneteenth is important because it reminds us of what we came through and what we can achieve.”
Today, we honor the resilience of our ancestors and recommit to building a future rooted in justice, equity, and truth.
