Food Recovery Network at UMD We partner with So Others Might Eat (SOME), the Community for Creative Non-Violence (CCNV) and Gospel Rescue Ministries. Volunteers are always wanted!

The Food Recovery Network is a network of student groups at UMD volunteering to recover the surplus food from the dining halls and sports games and donate it to hungry people in the DC area The Food Recovery Network (FRN) is a network of student groups and individuals at UMD volunteering to recover the surplus food from the dining halls and sports games and donate it to hungry men, women and child

ren in the DC area. Reducing food waste and providing for our neighbors makes our whole community stronger. It also helps the environment by reducing our carbon and methane footprint. In our pilot program during the 2010-11 school year, we recovered and donated over 6,000 meals! This year, we are expanding dramatically. In early October we reached 1,400 meals per week, and are on track to donate at least 15,000 meals this fall 2011 semester. After the amazing reception we got at UMD, we couldn't help asking ourselves, "Why wasn't this started until 2010? And why isn't this at every college campus?!?" In October 2011, as a first step in realizing our vision of national expansion, we achieved nonprofit status in Maryland! Our vision for 2012 is to achieve 501(c)(3) status and become a national resource center and think tank to jumpstart and support Food Recovery Network chapters on campuses across the country. We just started our second chapter, which is at Brown University, and are competing in several major funding competitions. If you're interested in volunteering or in joining our core leadership team, email [email protected].
