Yesterday, we had the opportunity to table at the Self-Care Fair for Mental Health Awarness week and reflect on an important connection: community service and mental well-being. 💚

Research shows that getting involved in your community can have positive effects on mental health by helping build connections, create a sense of purpose, and strengthen feelings of belonging.

Here at LCSL, there are so many meaningful ways to get involved, both on campus and in the local community! From service opportunities to campus programs and organizations, there’s something for everyone. 🌱✨

Join us for an evening with band directors Joe Lostumbo and Camilo Montoya of Orquesta Manplesa, a youth-led salsa band from DC’s historic Mount Pleasant neighborhood. Named after the Spanish pronunciation of Mount Pleasant, this vibrant salsa band focuses on keeping the musical tradition of Latinos in Washington D.C. Orquesta Manplesa lives by one rule: “keep them dancing.” Their eclectic mix of salsa, spanning different eras and regions, keeps the dance floor alive all night. Orquesta Manplesa puts into music what it means to be from DC: community and joy above all else.

Anacostia Clean-Up ❀

On April 11, our Restorative Practices Team partnered with Stamp Student Union and Bladensburg Waterfront Park to host an Anacostia River Cleanup, bringing together 30+ student and staff volunteers for a day of hands-on impact. From canoeing to shoreline cleanup, we worked together to care for our waterways and reflect on the ripple effects of our actions on the land we share.

🌱With support from the Terp Family Fund, volunteers enjoyed meals, community, and a closing restorative circle, making it a day rooted in service, reflection, and connection

Learn how to lead with confidence! “Leading with Confidence” is a panel conversation featuring current presidents and leaders of student organizations at the University of Maryland sponsored by LCSL and SORC. Come hear from fellow student leaders on their experiences, challenges, and lessons learned from being a leader on campus.

FREE dinner will be provided as supplies last. Students who RSVP and attend the event become eligible to win a $250 On-Campus Catering Grant for you a student organization that you belong to, if applicable. RSVP to attend by Sunday, April 26th to confirm your spot!

Tarif Shraim is the Muslim chaplain at the University of Maryland, College Park. Over the past two decades, Tarif has provided mentorship, pastoral care and coaching to Muslim college students and community members throughout Maryland. He frequently lectures on theology, spirituality, and emotional development and has special interest in the intersection between spirituality and positive psychology.

Tarif is the co-founder and executive director of the Center for Muslim Life at Maryland, and has served as an Imam in the Baltimore-Washington area for several years.
