Memorial Day - Today we pause to remember the reason for Memorial Day. The Grand Army of the Republic, a Civil War Veterans fraternal organization, created Decoration Day. This is a day to remember those fellow soldiers who died in the defense of our country.

The local GAR Post - Carlos Fletcher No.57 began this tradition in the late 1800s here in Colebrook and in the early 1920s turned over the responsibility to the George L O’Neil American Legion Post. For the past one hundred years rain or shine and through COVID, that tradition has been continued.

Looking Back - circa Winter 1910-11, Corner of Main St. Route 26. The great Aziscohos Dam along the Magalloway, River in Maine (edited) was built in 1910-1911 and the supplies all came through the Railroad line in Colebrook. It was then was loaded onto sleighs and pulled by horse teams East on Route 26 to Errol, then North on Rte 16 to Magalloway. In this image you see large boilers loaded on sleighs along Main Street. These were used to heat and mix the concrete for the dam. The little village of Colebrook was certainly a hub of commerce.
