This page is to promote the History of the Colebrook, NH Area and the doings of the Colebrook Area Historical Society programs and projects.

The Colebrook Area Historical Society was founded in 1992 to promote and preserve the history of the Colebrook, NH area. In 1995 the main museum was opened on the 2nd Flr of the Town Hall and in 2011 the Annex at the Tillotson Center was opened. The society is always interested in loans or donations of items of local interest.

Big Diamond Camps...Though located within the Town of Stewartstown, Big Diamond Pond is located on the eastern side of town next to Dixville. It was often associated with Colebrook due to the only road access from there. In 1904 Harry Houston, a gentleman from outside the area developed camps along the shore of Big Diamond Pond for sportsmen the enjoy the fishing and hunting there. About 1890 the dam there for the pond was raised and this increased the succesful fishing for years to come. Houston ran the camps through the 1910s. It continued through several owners and in the late 1960s the property was broken up and sold to individuals.

Looking Back. Dam on Mohawk River just above Parsons St/Route 26 Bridge circa 1900. Below is a photo of the dam that was located on the Mohawk River at the turn of the 20th Century. It was used to hold logs for the Hammond Sawmill located there on the North side of the River.
